How to Delete Your Instagram Account Permanently (And What to Consider First)

Deleting an Instagram account is a straightforward process, but Instagram has built in enough steps — and enough alternatives — that it's worth understanding exactly what you're doing before you confirm. Whether you're done with the platform entirely or just need a break, the path you take determines what happens to your photos, videos, followers, and data.

Permanent Deletion vs. Temporary Deactivation: They Are Not the Same

Before anything else, this distinction matters.

Permanent deletion removes your account, your profile, your posts, your messages, and your data from Instagram's servers. According to Meta's own policies, this process takes up to 90 days to complete fully, though your profile becomes invisible to others immediately. After that window closes, recovery is not possible.

Temporary deactivation (Instagram calls this "Deactivating" your account) hides your profile and content from other users, but keeps everything stored. You can reactivate simply by logging back in.

If you're certain you want out for good, that's deletion. If you're burned out or taking a break, deactivation preserves everything and costs you nothing to reverse.

How to Delete Your Instagram Account 🗑️

Instagram does not make deletion available inside the mobile app the way you might expect. The steps vary slightly depending on your access point.

From a Mobile Browser or Desktop Browser

  1. Go to accountscenter.meta.com or navigate to Instagram's "Delete account" page directly
  2. Log in if prompted
  3. Go to Accounts Center → Personal details → Account ownership and control
  4. Select your Instagram account
  5. Choose Deactivation or deletion
  6. Select Delete account
  7. Instagram will ask you to choose a reason from a dropdown menu
  8. You'll be prompted to confirm your password
  9. Tap or click Delete account

After confirmation, your account enters a 30-day grace period. During this time, you can cancel the deletion by logging back in. After 30 days, the account is scheduled for permanent removal, with data clearance taking up to 90 days total.

From the Instagram App (iOS or Android)

Instagram's app now routes account deletion through Meta Accounts Center, which means the in-app path has shifted over time. As of recent app versions:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your Profile
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (three lines, top right)
  3. Go to Settings and privacy
  4. Scroll to Accounts Center
  5. Follow the same path: Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion

If your app version or region shows a different layout, the most reliable fallback is always to use a browser and visit Instagram's help pages directly.

What Gets Deleted — And What Doesn't

This is where many users are surprised.

What disappears:

  • Your profile, username, and bio
  • All photos and videos you've posted
  • Stories, Reels, and Highlights
  • Your followers and following lists
  • Direct messages on your end (though recipients may retain copies)
  • Comments you've left on other accounts

What may persist:

  • Messages you sent to others may remain visible in their inboxes
  • Copies of your content that others have screenshotted or reshared
  • Data shared with third-party apps that were connected to your Instagram account

This last point is important. If you used Instagram to log into other apps or services, those connections and any data already shared with those third parties won't be automatically revoked by deleting Instagram. You'd need to handle that separately through each service.

Download Your Data Before You Delete

Instagram allows you to request a copy of your data before deletion, and this is worth doing if you have years of photos or want a record of your activity.

To download your data:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy → Accounts Center
  2. Select Your information and permissions
  3. Choose Download your information
  4. Select the format (HTML for readability, JSON for technical use) and date range
  5. Instagram emails you a download link — this can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days depending on account size

Do this before initiating deletion, not after.

Variables That Affect Your Decision

The mechanics of deletion are fixed, but your situation introduces real differences in what makes sense.

How long you've had the account determines how much data you'd be walking away from — years of posts, connections, and messages versus a newer account with minimal history.

Connected apps and services matter if you've used Instagram Login ("Log in with Instagram") on third-party platforms. Deleting Instagram can break those logins.

Business or creator accounts carry additional considerations — if your account is linked to a Facebook Page, an ad account, or a Meta Business Suite setup, deletion may affect those connections.

Shared direct message threads live on in recipients' inboxes regardless of what you do on your end.

Account recovery expectations — if there's any chance you'd want back in, deactivation is reversible; deletion is not.
