How to Disable Facebook: Deactivation vs. Deletion Explained

Facebook gives you two ways to step back from the platform — deactivation and permanent deletion — and they work very differently. Understanding which option does what, and what happens to your data and connections afterward, is the first step before touching any settings.

What "Disabling" Facebook Actually Means

When most people say they want to "disable" Facebook, they usually mean one of two things:

  • Temporarily deactivating their account (going invisible without losing anything)
  • Permanently deleting their account (removing everything for good)

Facebook uses the word deactivate for the temporary option and delete for the permanent one. There's no in-between, and the consequences of choosing the wrong one can range from mildly annoying to irreversible.

Deactivating Your Facebook Account

Deactivation is Facebook's pause button. When you deactivate:

  • Your profile, photos, posts, and timeline become invisible to other users
  • You won't appear in search results
  • Friends cannot tag you or see your content
  • You can still use Facebook Messenger (your messages remain)
  • You can reactivate any time simply by logging back in

How to Deactivate on Desktop

How to Deactivate on Mobile (iOS or Android)

Facebook will ask you to enter your password and may present a screen designed to discourage you — you can skip past it.

Permanently Deleting Your Facebook Account 🗑️

Deletion is permanent. Once the process completes, your account, photos, posts, videos, and activity history are removed from Facebook's servers. This cannot be undone.

Key things to know before deleting:

  • Facebook holds your account in a 30-day grace period before deletion begins. If you log in during those 30 days, the deletion is automatically cancelled.
  • Full deletion of all data (backups included) can take up to 90 days after the process starts.

How to Permanently Delete

The path is identical to deactivation — through Settings → Your Facebook Information → Deactivation and Deletion — but you select Delete Account instead.

Before deleting, Facebook lets you Download Your Information, which is worth doing if you want to keep your photos, messages, or post history locally.

Disabling the Facebook App vs. the Account

There's another layer here worth separating out: disabling the app on your device is not the same as disabling your account.

On Android, you can disable the Facebook app entirely through your phone's app settings, which stops it running in the background and removes it from your home screen — but your account remains fully active. Friends can still see your profile, tag you, and send you messages.

On iOS, you can delete the app from your device with the same result — account stays live, app is gone.

  • Your platform — the exact menu paths vary slightly between iOS, Android, and desktop browser versions of Facebook, and Facebook's interface updates frequently enough that menu labels occasionally shift
