How to Cancel a Subscription on Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video offers two distinct types of subscriptions, and knowing which one you have changes everything about how you cancel it. Rushing into the wrong settings menu is the most common reason people end up confused — or still getting charged.
Two Types of Amazon Video Subscriptions
Before touching any settings, identify what you're actually subscribed to:
Amazon Prime — This is the full membership that includes Prime Video as one of many benefits (free shipping, Prime Music, Prime Reading, etc.). Canceling Prime cancels your access to Prime Video as part of that bundle.
Prime Video Add-on Channels — These are separate subscriptions you've purchased through Prime Video's channel marketplace. Examples include Paramount+, Starz, AMC+, and others. These exist independently of your Prime membership. Canceling Prime does not cancel these.
Getting clear on which type you have determines where you go and what you'll lose.
How to Cancel Amazon Prime (Which Includes Prime Video)
On a Web Browser
- Go to amazon.com and sign in.
- Hover over "Account & Lists" in the top-right corner.
- Select "Your Account."
- Under the "Digital content and devices" section, click "Prime Membership."
- On the Prime membership page, click "Manage membership" or "Update, cancel, and more."
- Select "End Membership."
- Amazon will walk you through a confirmation flow — often showing you what you'll lose and offering a pause option. Confirm your choice to complete the cancellation.
On the Amazon Mobile App
- Open the Amazon app and tap the menu (☰).
- Tap "Your Account" → "Manage Prime Membership."
- Follow the same confirmation steps as above.
On a Smart TV or Streaming Device
Direct cancellation through a TV app is generally not supported. Amazon routes cancellations through its website or app — this is consistent across Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and similar platforms.
One exception: If you subscribed to Prime through Apple's App Store or the Google Play Store, Amazon's website cannot cancel it. You must cancel through Apple's or Google's subscription settings directly. Check your email receipt to confirm where you originally subscribed.
How to Cancel a Prime Video Add-on Channel 🎬
These are handled separately from your Prime account.
On a Web Browser
- Go to primevideo.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon (top-right) and select "Memberships & Subscriptions."
- Find the channel you want to cancel.
- Click "Cancel Channel" next to it.
- Confirm the cancellation.
On Mobile
The steps are similar through the Prime Video mobile app — navigate to your profile, find subscriptions or memberships, and cancel the specific channel. Note that iOS users who subscribed to a channel through Apple may need to cancel through Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions instead.
What Happens After You Cancel
| Subscription Type | What Stops Immediately | When Access Ends |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Prime | No immediate cutoff | End of current billing period |
| Prime Video Add-on Channel | No immediate cutoff | End of current billing period |
| Free trial (Prime or channel) | Charged if not canceled before trial ends | At trial end |
You keep access until the billing cycle closes. Amazon does not pro-rate partial months in most cases — canceling mid-cycle means you've already paid for that period and you'll retain access until it expires.
Common Variables That Affect the Process
Where you originally signed up is the single biggest variable. Subscriptions created through Apple, Google, or a third-party carrier billing arrangement are locked to that platform's cancellation system. Amazon cannot override this.
Account type matters too. If you're on a Prime Student or discounted Prime plan, the cancellation path is the same, but the terms around refunds and trial periods may differ.
Household accounts and shared memberships add a layer — if someone else manages the Prime membership (e.g., you're an Amazon Household member), you may not have the authority to cancel from your login.
Billing through a third party (like a mobile carrier that bundles Prime) means cancellation goes through that carrier, not Amazon.
Why the Process Feels More Complicated Than It Should
Amazon intentionally builds friction into the cancellation flow. You'll be presented with options to pause your membership (up to three months), downgrade, or reminded of benefits you'll lose. These are real alternatives worth reading — but they're also retention tactics. None of them are required steps. You can bypass them and proceed directly to cancellation at each prompt.
The confirmation screen will show your access end date. Screenshot or note that date — it's your reference point if a charge appears after you believed the account was closed. 📋
The Detail That Catches Most People
Many users cancel Prime thinking they've also canceled their add-on channels. They haven't. Add-on channels have their own independent billing. After canceling Prime, check your Memberships & Subscriptions page separately to audit any remaining active channels.
Similarly, canceling a channel doesn't affect Prime. These two subscription layers operate entirely in parallel.
Whether you're dealing with a trial you forgot about, a channel that snuck into your billing history, or a full Prime membership you no longer need, the process is straightforward once you know which subscription you're actually targeting — and which platform controls it. ✅
