How to Access BIOS Settings on Any Computer

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is the firmware that runs before your operating system loads. It controls fundamental hardware behavior — boot order, CPU settings, memory timing, fan curves, and more. Knowing how to access it is an essential skill for anyone troubleshooting a PC, upgrading hardware, or configuring system behavior at a deep level.

What Is the BIOS (and UEFI)?

Most modern computers technically use UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) rather than the traditional BIOS, but the terms are used interchangeably in everyday conversation. UEFI is a more advanced version with a graphical interface, mouse support, and faster boot times — but you access it the same way and it serves the same fundamental purpose.

When people say "go into the BIOS," they mean the pre-boot firmware environment where hardware-level settings live.

The most common way to access BIOS settings is to press a specific key immediately after powering on your computer — before the operating system starts loading. The exact key depends on your motherboard manufacturer or laptop brand.

Why You Might Not See the BIOS Key Option

Several situations can block the standard key-press method:

  • Fast Boot or Ultra-Fast Boot enabled — the system deliberately skips the keyboard input window
  • BitLocker encryption — changing certain BIOS settings may trigger a recovery key prompt on restart
  • Secure Boot restrictions — some OEM machines (especially business laptops) limit which settings are visible or editable
  • Locked BIOS with administrator password — common on corporate or refurbished machines

On systems where the BIOS is administrator-password protected, you'll need credentials before making any changes. Resetting a forgotten BIOS password on a laptop is significantly more involved than on a desktop.

How straightforward BIOS access is — and what you can actually do once you're in — depends heavily on your specific situation:
