How to Connect an AirTag Without the Pull Tab (And What Actually Happens)

Apple's AirTag is designed to be simple out of the box — but the setup process depends entirely on one small piece of plastic: the pull tab. That tab sits between the battery and its contacts, keeping the AirTag in a dormant state during shipping. Pulling it activates the battery, which triggers the AirTag to power on and become discoverable.

But what happens if that tab is already gone, missing, or wasn't there when you opened the package? Here's what you need to know.

Why the Pull Tab Exists in the First Place

The pull tab is a thin plastic insulator inserted between the CR2032 battery and the internal battery contacts inside the AirTag. Without it, the battery would drain slowly during storage and transit. It's a common design choice in small battery-powered devices — hearing aids use the same approach.

When you remove the tab, the circuit closes, the AirTag powers on, and it emits a startup chime. That chime signals it's ready to pair.

If your AirTag didn't come with a tab, or the tab was already removed, the device may already be powered on — which changes how you approach setup.

Scenarios Where the Tab Is Already Gone

There are a few legitimate reasons you might encounter a tabless AirTag:

  • Refurbished or open-box unit — the tab was removed by a previous owner or during inspection
  • Retail display model — tabs are sometimes pulled for demo purposes
  • The tab tore off partially — leaving the battery still insulated or only partially connected
  • Factory defect — rare, but the tab can occasionally be missing from a sealed box

Each of these situations leads to a slightly different starting point.

What to Do If the Tab Is Already Removed

Check Whether the AirTag Is Already On

If the tab has been pulled, the AirTag should already be powered. You can confirm this by:

  1. Bringing it close to your iPhone (running iOS 14.5 or later)
  2. The Find My pairing prompt should appear automatically
  3. If no prompt appears, the battery may be dead or the AirTag may already be paired to another Apple ID

If you hear a chime when you pick it up or press the back of the device, it's on.

Force a Reset If It Was Previously Paired 🔄

An AirTag that was previously linked to another Apple ID won't pair to yours until it's factory reset. Here's the reset process:

  1. Press down on the stainless steel back of the AirTag and rotate counterclockwise until it stops
  2. Remove the back and take out the CR2032 battery
  3. Reinsert the battery, pressing down until you hear a chime
  4. Repeat the remove-and-reinsert process five times total — each time you should hear a chime, and on the fifth, a different chime confirms the reset

After the fifth chime, the AirTag is reset and ready to pair fresh.

Pair It Through the Find My App

Once the AirTag is powered and unlinked:

  1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap the Items tab at the bottom
  3. Tap the + button to add a new item
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts — the AirTag should appear automatically if it's powered and nearby

The entire pairing process typically takes under a minute once the device is discoverable.

What If the Battery Is Dead?

If the tab was removed long ago and the AirTag sat unused, the battery may have discharged. The CR2032 is a standard coin cell battery available at most electronics and grocery stores. Replacing it is straightforward:

  • Twist off the back using the same counterclockwise motion
  • Swap the old battery for a new CR2032 (positive side up)
  • The AirTag will chime on startup, confirming it's live

After replacing the battery, you'll need to pair or reset the device as described above.

Variables That Affect Your Experience

Not all tabless AirTag situations play out the same way. Several factors shape what you'll actually encounter:

FactorImpact
iOS versionPairing requires iOS 14.5 or later; older versions won't trigger the prompt
Previous Apple ID linkResets are required before a new pairing is possible
Battery levelA depleted battery means no chime, no prompt, no pairing
AirTag firmwareSome features depend on firmware that updates automatically after pairing
Find My network settingsYour Apple ID must have Find My enabled in iCloud settings

📱 The iPhone model matters less than the iOS version — even older iPhones running iOS 14.5+ can pair and use AirTags.

The Part That Varies by User

Where this gets more personal is when you factor in what state your specific AirTag is actually in. A brand-new unit with no tab is different from a used one sitting in a drawer for two years. A device that chimes immediately is a different problem than one that stays completely silent regardless of what you try.

Whether you need a simple pairing flow, a full reset sequence, or just a fresh battery — and whether your Apple ID setup and iOS version are already ready to go — depends on details that only your specific situation can answer.
