How to Connect a Sony DVD Player to the Sony STR-DH190 Stereo Receiver

The Sony STR-DH190 is a 2-channel stereo receiver — not a home theater AV receiver. That distinction matters a lot when you're connecting a DVD player, because it shapes which connections are available, what audio you'll actually hear, and how video gets routed to your TV. Getting this setup right means understanding what the STR-DH190 can and can't do.

What the Sony STR-DH190 Actually Does

Before connecting anything, it helps to know the STR-DH190's role in your system. This receiver is designed to amplify stereo audio and send it to a pair of speakers. It has no HDMI ports, no video switching, and no surround sound decoding. Audio goes in, gets amplified, and comes out through your speakers.

That means your DVD player will connect to the STR-DH190 only for audio. Video from the DVD player needs to travel a separate path — directly to your TV.

Audio Connection Options: DVD Player to STR-DH190

The STR-DH190 accepts analog audio input via RCA connectors (the red and white cables). It does not have optical, coaxial digital, or HDMI audio inputs. This is important because it determines which output on your DVD player you'll use.

Using Analog RCA Audio (Most Common Method)

Most Sony DVD players — and virtually all standard DVD players — include analog stereo RCA outputs (red and white). This is your primary connection method.

Steps:

  1. Locate the AUDIO OUT (L/R) RCA jacks on the back of your DVD player — typically color-coded white (left) and red (right).
  2. Run a stereo RCA cable from those outputs to one of the analog input pairs on the back of the STR-DH190 (labeled CD, AUDIO, PHONO, or similar — use any non-phono input).
  3. On the STR-DH190's front panel, select the corresponding input source using the Input Selector knob.
  4. Play audio from the DVD player — you should hear stereo sound through your connected speakers.

⚠️ Note: If your DVD player only outputs Dolby Digital or DTS via digital outputs, those signals won't work with the STR-DH190 since it has no digital audio input. The analog RCA output bypasses that issue entirely, delivering a standard stereo mix.

Video Connection: This Goes Directly to Your TV

The STR-DH190 plays no role in video. Your DVD player's video output — whether HDMI, composite (yellow RCA), or component (red/green/blue) — needs to connect directly to an available input on your TV.

Most modern Sony DVD players include HDMI output, which delivers the best picture quality to your TV. Older models may only offer composite or component video.

Putting It Together: The Full Signal Flow

Once both connections are made, your system runs two separate signal paths:

  • Audio path: DVD Player → RCA cable → STR-DH190 → Speakers
  • Video path: DVD Player → HDMI or composite → TV

When watching a DVD, you'll control volume through the STR-DH190 and visuals through your TV. Make sure your TV's audio output isn't also playing — either mute the TV's internal speakers or check its audio settings so you're not hearing double audio.

Matching the Right Input on the STR-DH190

The STR-DH190 has several labeled inputs on the back panel. Any of the following work for a DVD player connection:

  • CD — clean, line-level input; a common choice
  • VIDEO 1 / VIDEO 2 — line-level inputs often used for media devices
  • AUDIO — general-purpose line input

🎛️ Avoid using the PHONO input unless your DVD player explicitly outputs a phono-level signal (it doesn't — phono inputs are for turntables and have a different gain/EQ curve).

Variables That Affect Your Results

Even with the right cables and connections, a few factors can influence how well this setup performs:

  • Speaker quality and impedance: The STR-DH190 drives 4–16 ohm speakers. Mismatched impedance can affect volume output and receiver performance.
  • DVD player audio output level: Some players allow you to adjust the output volume in their settings menu — this affects how loud your signal hits the receiver.
  • Cable quality: For short runs, standard RCA cables work fine. Longer cable runs (over 10–15 feet) benefit from cables with better shielding to reduce interference.
  • Room acoustics and speaker placement: The STR-DH190 is a stereo system, so speaker placement has a significant effect on the listening experience.

Audio Quality Expectations with This Setup

Because the STR-DH190 is a stereo-only receiver, you won't get 5.1 surround sound from DVD content — even if the disc contains a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. What you'll hear is a 2-channel stereo mix, either a native stereo track from the disc or a downmixed version of the surround audio.

For music DVDs, concert films, or casual movie watching, stereo through a good pair of bookshelf or floor-standing speakers can sound excellent. For immersive home theater with surround channels, the STR-DH190's architecture isn't designed for that — that's a different class of receiver.

When the Setup Doesn't Work

If you're getting no audio after connecting:

  • Confirm the input selector on the STR-DH190 matches where you plugged in the RCA cables
  • Check that the DVD player is playing content, not just in standby
  • Verify the RCA cable is fully seated at both ends
  • Try a different RCA input pair on the receiver to rule out a faulty input
  • Check that volume isn't set to zero and the receiver isn't muted

The setup itself is straightforward — but whether this combination fully meets your listening expectations depends on what you're trying to do with it, the speakers you're running, and how much the stereo-only limitation matters for your content.
