How to Measure a Monitor Screen: Size, Dimensions, and What the Numbers Mean

Buying a monitor, comparing specs, or just trying to figure out whether that screen will actually fit your desk — at some point, you need to know how monitor measurements work. The numbers manufacturers use aren't always intuitive, and the way screens are measured can lead to real surprises when a monitor arrives and looks nothing like you expected.

Every monitor size you see advertised — 24-inch, 27-inch, 32-inch — refers to the diagonal measurement of the screen panel itself, not the width, height, or the outer frame of the monitor.
