How to Measure the Size of a Computer Monitor
Monitor size is one of the most commonly misunderstood specs in tech. People assume the number on the box matches what they actually see on screen — and that's only partially true. Knowing how monitor size is actually measured, and what that number does and doesn't tell you, changes how you shop, compare, and set up your workspace.
The Standard Method: Diagonal Screen Measurement
Computer monitors are measured diagonally, from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. Specifically, that's corner-to-corner across the active display area — the part that actually lights up and shows content.
To measure it yourself, you'll need a tape measure or ruler. Place one end at the top-left corner of the screen (not the bezel or frame) and stretch it to the bottom-right corner. The measurement is taken in inches in most markets, though centimeters are used in some regions.
That diagonal number is what you see listed as "27-inch monitor" or "32-inch display." It says nothing directly about width, height, or usable desk space — just that single diagonal line.
Why the Bezel Doesn't Count

Resolution matters as much as size. Curved displays are still measured diagonally, but the curve adds a layer of nuance.
