How to Add an App to a Vizio Smart TV

Vizio Smart TVs give you access to streaming services, games, and utilities — but adding apps works a little differently depending on which platform your TV runs. Understanding the system your TV uses is the first step to knowing exactly what's possible.

What Platform Is Your Vizio TV Running?

Not all Vizio Smart TVs work the same way. Vizio has used two distinct smart TV platforms over the years:

  • SmartCast — the platform used on most Vizio TVs made from 2016 onward. It's built around Chromecast and AirPlay functionality, with a curated app selection built in.
  • VIA (Vizio Internet Apps) and VIA+ — older platforms found on Vizio TVs from roughly 2012–2016. These have a more traditional app store model.

Knowing which one you have changes everything about how apps get added. You can check by pressing the V key or Home button on your remote — SmartCast will show a tile-based interface, while VIA systems show an app dock.

Adding Apps on SmartCast TVs

SmartCast doesn't operate like a traditional app store. You cannot freely browse and download any app you want the way you would on an Android or Fire TV device. Instead, Vizio pre-installs a fixed set of apps — think Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max, Tubi, and similar mainstream services — and that list is updated periodically by Vizio through firmware updates rather than by the user browsing a store.

What you can do on SmartCast:

  1. Add pre-installed apps to your home row — Press the Home button, scroll to find available apps, and select them to pin to your home screen.
  2. Use the Vizio Mobile App — Download the free Vizio SmartCast app on your iOS or Android phone. It functions as a remote and lets you cast content directly from your phone to the TV.
  3. Cast from supported apps — Apps like YouTube, Spotify, Netflix, and hundreds of others support Chromecast built-in. You tap the cast icon from your phone or tablet and the content plays on your TV without the app needing to be natively installed.
  4. Use Apple AirPlay — On supported SmartCast models, AirPlay 2 lets you mirror or cast from Apple devices directly.

The key thing to understand: SmartCast is a casting-first platform. The TV is the screen; your phone or tablet does a lot of the browsing and launching.

Adding Apps on VIA and VIA+ TVs

Older Vizio TVs with the VIA platform work more like a traditional smart TV app ecosystem:

  1. Press the V button on your remote to open the app dock.
  2. Highlight the Connected TV Store or app marketplace tile.
  3. Browse available apps by category or search for a specific one.
  4. Select an app and choose Install or Add.

VIA+ models support a wider range of apps than original VIA devices, though the catalog is significantly smaller than modern streaming platforms. Many popular apps have stopped supporting VIA entirely as the platform has aged.

The Sideloading Question 📲

One question that comes up often: can you sideload apps onto a Vizio TV the way you can with an Android device?

The short answer is no — not easily or reliably. SmartCast is not a full Android TV or Google TV implementation. It runs a proprietary OS that doesn't expose the same developer-facing tools that allow APK sideloading. While workarounds have been discussed in tech communities, they're unsupported, potentially unstable, and can vary significantly based on firmware version.

If your priority is unrestricted app access, that's a meaningful constraint of the platform to understand.

When the App You Want Isn't Available

This is where individual setups start to diverge significantly. If a specific app isn't natively available on your Vizio, several paths exist — each with its own trade-offs:

OptionWhat It DoesRequires
Cast from phone/tabletSends content from a supported app to the TVCompatible app + same Wi-Fi network
Connect a streaming stickAdds a full app ecosystem via HDMIRoku stick, Fire Stick, Apple TV, etc.
Use a gaming consoleAccess apps through Xbox, PlayStation, etc.Console connected via HDMI
Mirror screen from deviceShares your phone/laptop screen to the TVAirPlay or Chromecast support

Streaming sticks and boxes are the most common solution for filling the gap. They plug into an HDMI port and essentially run their own platform on top of whatever the TV natively supports.

Variables That Affect Your Options 🔧

The right approach for any individual depends on factors that vary widely:

  • TV model year — SmartCast features have expanded with firmware updates, and not all SmartCast TVs support AirPlay
  • Firmware version — App availability on SmartCast is updated through firmware, so an older firmware may have a smaller app library
  • Network setup — Casting requires your TV and casting device to be on the same Wi-Fi network; mesh networks with band separation can cause issues
  • Which apps you need — A TV that covers 90% of your services natively may work fine without any additions, while niche or regional apps may never appear on the platform

SmartCast's approach suits users who already own phones or tablets they're happy to use as remotes, or who primarily use major streaming services that are pre-installed. It works differently for someone expecting a fully self-contained experience with open app access.

Whether the native app selection covers what you need — or whether adding external hardware makes more sense — comes down to your specific services, devices, and how you prefer to interact with your TV.
