Turning your TV into a monitor — or streaming your desktop to the big screen — is one of those tasks that sounds simple until you realize there are five different ways to do it, and which one works best depends entirely on your specific hardware. Why the Connection Method Matters

Not all computer-to-TV connections deliver the same result. The method you use affects video resolution, audio output, input lag, cable length limitations, and whether you're mirroring your screen or extending it as a second display. Getting this wrong means either a degraded picture, no sound, or a setup that works technically but feels sluggish in practice.

Wired Connection Methods

HDMI — The Most Common Starting Point

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) carries both video and audio over a single cable, which makes it the go-to for most setups. If your computer has a full-size HDMI port and your TV has an available HDMI input, this is typically the most straightforward path.

A few things to check before assuming it just works:

  • HDMI versions matter. HDMI 1.4 supports up to 4K at 30Hz. HDMI 2.0 pushes 4K at 60Hz. HDMI 2.1 handles 4K at 120Hz and 8K. If your computer and TV support different versions, the connection will negotiate down to the lower standard.
