How to Disconnect CarPlay: Wired, Wireless, and Permanent Options

Apple CarPlay integrates your iPhone with your car's infotainment system, putting Maps, Messages, and music on the dashboard screen. But there are plenty of reasons you might want to disconnect it — temporarily, selectively, or for good. The method that works depends on how CarPlay is connected in the first place, what car you're driving, and what you actually want to stop.

The Two Types of CarPlay Connections

Before disconnecting anything, it helps to know which type of CarPlay setup you're dealing with.

Wired CarPlay connects your iPhone to the car via a USB-A or USB-C cable. The connection is active only when the cable is plugged in.

Wireless CarPlay connects over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi simultaneously. Your phone pairs automatically when you get in range of the car, with no cable required.

Each type disconnects differently — and confusing the two is a common reason people think CarPlay "won't turn off."

How to Disconnect Wired CarPlay

This is the simplest case. Unplug the USB cable from either the phone or the car's USB port, and CarPlay ends immediately. The infotainment system returns to its default state.

If CarPlay is launching automatically every time you plug in your phone (for example, when you're just charging and don't want CarPlay to activate), you can disable that behavior on the iPhone side:

  1. Go to Settings → General → CarPlay
  2. Tap your car's name
  3. Toggle off "Connect Automatically" if available, or tap "Forget This Car" to remove the pairing entirely

Note: The "Connect Automatically" toggle isn't available on all vehicles or iOS versions. If you don't see it, forgetting the car and re-pairing only when needed is the manual alternative.

How to Disconnect Wireless CarPlay

Wireless CarPlay is more persistent by design — that's the whole point. But it gives you more disconnection options depending on how thorough you want to be.

Option 1: Disconnect from the iPhone 🔌

Swipe down to open Control Center. If CarPlay is active, you'll see a CarPlay icon. Tap it to disconnect the current session. This ends CarPlay without removing the pairing, so it will reconnect automatically next time you're in range of your car.

Option 2: Turn Off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth Temporarily

Since wireless CarPlay requires both Bluetooth (for the initial handshake) and Wi-Fi (for data transfer), disabling either one will prevent it from connecting. Tapping Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off in Control Center pauses those radios temporarily — but note this turns them back on automatically after a period of time (usually several hours), depending on your iOS version.

For a more reliable temporary block, go to Settings → Wi-Fi or Settings → Bluetooth and toggle them off there. This doesn't auto-reset.

Option 3: Forget the Car Entirely

To stop CarPlay from ever connecting to a specific vehicle:

  1. Settings → General → CarPlay
  2. Tap your car's name
  3. Tap "Forget This Car"

This removes the pairing. CarPlay won't reconnect to that car unless you set it up again from scratch.

How to Disable CarPlay Completely on iPhone

If you want to prevent CarPlay from working at all — across any vehicle — you can turn it off at the iOS restrictions level.

  1. Go to Settings → Screen Time
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions
  3. Enable restrictions if they're not already on
  4. Tap Allowed Apps
  5. Toggle CarPlay off

With this setting active, CarPlay won't launch in any car, wired or wireless. This is a common approach for parents setting up a device for a younger driver, or fleet managers restricting phone use in company vehicles.

Disconnecting CarPlay from the Car's Side

Most modern head units let you manage CarPlay directly from the infotainment screen.

  • Look for a settings or devices menu in your car's interface
  • Many systems allow you to forget paired phones or disable wireless CarPlay entirely
  • Some vehicles have a dedicated CarPlay toggle in the system settings that prevents the feature from activating even when a phone is connected

The exact path varies significantly by manufacturer and infotainment platform — Ford Sync, Audi MMI, Toyota Audio Multimedia, and Honda's system all handle this differently. Consulting your vehicle's manual or the manufacturer's support site is the most reliable approach for car-side settings.

Variables That Change the Process 🚗

Several factors affect which steps apply to your specific situation:

  • iOS version — Older versions of iOS handle the "Connect Automatically" toggle differently or may not show it at all
  • Wired vs. wireless — Two completely different disconnection paths
  • Vehicle make and model — Infotainment systems vary widely in their CarPlay management options
  • Shared or managed device — Screen Time restrictions require a passcode to reverse, which matters if the phone is used by multiple people
  • iPhone model — Older iPhones don't support wireless CarPlay at all, so some options simply won't appear

Whether you're trying to stop a one-time session, prevent automatic connections, or lock CarPlay off entirely, the right steps depend on which of these variables apply to your phone and your car.
