How to Delete History on Your Phone: Browser, Call, App & Search Data Explained

Deleting history on a phone sounds simple — but "history" actually refers to several different types of stored data, and where you find each one depends on your device, operating system, and the apps you use. This guide breaks down what each type of history is, where it lives, and what actually happens when you delete it.

What Does "History" Actually Mean on a Phone?

When most people ask how to delete history, they usually mean one of these:

  • Browser history — websites visited in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or another browser
  • Search history — queries typed into Google, Bing, or a browser's address bar
  • Call history — logs of incoming, outgoing, and missed calls
  • App activity history — in-app searches, recently viewed items, or usage logs
  • Location history — GPS data stored by maps or system services
  • Google or Apple account history — activity synced to cloud accounts across devices

Each of these is stored differently and cleared in a different place. Deleting one doesn't delete the others.

How to Delete Browser History

On Android (Chrome)

Open Chrome → tap the three-dot menu → HistoryClear browsing data. You can choose a time range (last hour, last 7 days, all time) and select what to delete: browsing history, cookies, cached images, or saved passwords.

Clearing history in the app only clears it on that device — unless Chrome sync is enabled, in which case history may also be removed from your Google account across all synced devices.

On iPhone (Safari)

Go to SettingsSafariClear History and Website Data. This removes history, cookies, and other browsing data from Safari across all devices signed into the same Apple ID if iCloud Safari sync is turned on.

Alternatively, open Safari → tap the book icon → History tabClear to choose a time range.

Third-Party Browsers

Firefox, Edge, Brave, and other browsers each have their own in-app history settings, typically found in the menu → SettingsPrivacy or History. The same logic applies: clearing locally may or may not sync to an account.

How to Delete Search History

Search history and browser history are not always the same thing. 🔍

If you search on Google while signed into your Google account, that query is saved to My Activity (myactivity.google.com) — even if you clear your browser history. To fully delete Google search history:

  • Go to myactivity.google.com → select activity → delete by date range or search topic
  • Or open the Google app → tap your profile picture → Search history → manage or delete

On iPhone, Siri search suggestions and Spotlight history are managed separately under SettingsSiri & Search.

How to Delete Call History

Android

Open the Phone appRecents tab → tap and hold individual entries to delete them, or look for a bulk delete option in the menu (varies by manufacturer). On Samsung devices, this is often under the three-dot menu → Delete.

iPhone

Open PhoneRecents → tap Edit (top right) → delete individual calls, or tap Clear to remove all recent calls at once.

Note: If you use carrier-based call logs or a VoIP app (WhatsApp, Google Voice, etc.), those call logs are managed separately within each app.

How to Delete App-Specific History

Many apps maintain their own internal history — YouTube watch history, Maps search history, Spotify recently played, Amazon browsing history. These are not controlled by your phone's system settings.

AppWhere to Clear History
YouTubeProfile → History → Clear watch history
Google MapsProfile → Your data in Maps → Delete activity
SpotifySettings → Clear cache (play history managed via account)
AmazonAccount → Browsing History → Manage
InstagramSettings → Security → Search History

These may also sync to account servers, meaning clearing the app cache locally doesn't always delete the data from the account.

How to Delete Location History

On Android, location history is tied to your Google account. Go to SettingsGoogleManage your Google AccountData & PrivacyLocation History — or visit the Google Maps Timeline directly.

On iPhone, go to SettingsPrivacy & SecurityLocation ServicesSystem ServicesSignificant Locations to view and clear location history stored locally.

Some third-party apps (navigation, fitness, weather) maintain their own location logs separately. 📍

What Actually Gets Deleted — and What Doesn't

This is where many users are surprised. Clearing history on your device often removes local copies, but:

  • Synced accounts (Google, Apple ID) may retain copies server-side
  • Your carrier logs call and SMS metadata independently of your phone
  • Apps with accounts (Google, Facebook, TikTok) store activity on their servers
  • Backup files (iCloud, Google One, Samsung Cloud) may preserve deleted data

Deleting browser history on your phone doesn't erase it from a synced laptop. Deleting a call from your recent list doesn't remove it from your carrier's records.

The Variables That Determine Your Experience

How history is stored — and how completely it can be removed — depends on:

  • Operating system version: Settings menus and options differ between Android 12, 13, 14, and iOS versions
  • Device manufacturer: Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and others customize Android in ways that change where settings live
  • Whether you're signed into accounts: Signed-in users have cloud-synced history; incognito or guest mode users may not
  • Which apps you use: A privacy-focused browser like Brave handles history differently than Chrome
  • Sync and backup settings: Auto-backup can preserve data you thought you deleted

Someone using a stock Android Pixel with no Google account signed in has a very different experience than someone on a Samsung Galaxy deeply integrated with a Google Workspace account and iCloud backup active on the side.

The type of history you actually want gone — and whether it's stored locally, on an account, or with a third party — is what determines which steps will actually work for your setup.
