How to Clear an iPhone Before Selling It

Selling your iPhone is straightforward — but only if you wipe it correctly first. A partial reset can leave your personal data exposed, lock the next owner out of the device, or create headaches with Apple's activation system. Done right, a factory reset takes about five minutes and leaves the phone in a clean, ready-to-sell state.

Here's exactly how the process works, what each step does, and why the order matters.

Why Proper Preparation Matters Before You Wipe

Skipping steps doesn't just risk your privacy — it can make the phone genuinely unusable for the buyer. Activation Lock, part of Apple's Find My system, ties the device to your Apple ID. If you sell the phone without disabling it, the new owner will be stuck at a screen asking for your credentials. They can't bypass it, and Apple won't unlock it without proof of ownership.

A complete wipe involves three distinct actions:

  • Backing up your data (optional but strongly recommended)
  • Signing out of your Apple ID / disabling Find My
  • Erasing all content and settings

Each serves a different purpose. Don't treat them as interchangeable.

Step 1: Back Up Your iPhone 📱

Before you erase anything, decide whether you want to keep your data. If you're moving to a new iPhone, a backup lets you restore everything — apps, photos, messages, settings — onto the new device.

iCloud Backup: Go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Your iPhone needs to be on Wi-Fi and plugged in for best results. iCloud gives you 5GB free, which may not be enough if you have a lot of photos or videos.

Mac or PC Backup (Finder / iTunes): Connect your iPhone via USB, open Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes (Windows or older macOS), and select Back Up Now. This stores the full backup locally and doesn't count against your iCloud storage.

If you're not moving to a new Apple device, or you've already transferred what you need, you can skip the backup entirely — but make sure you haven't forgotten anything, because the erase is permanent.

Step 2: Sign Out of Your Apple ID and Disable Find My

This is the most critical step for the buyer. Disabling Find My automatically removes Activation Lock, which is what lets the next person set up the phone without your credentials.

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → scroll to the bottom → Sign Out.

You'll be prompted to enter your Apple ID password. You can choose to keep a local copy of certain data (like contacts or calendars) on the device — since you're erasing it anyway, this doesn't matter. Tap Sign Out and confirm.

Alternatively, you can turn off Find My specifically before erasing: Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone → toggle off

Both paths achieve the same result: your Apple ID is unlinked from the device.

Step 3: Erase All Content and Settings

Once your Apple ID is disconnected, the full erase is simple.

If your iPhone uses an eSIM (rather than a physical SIM card), the erase process will prompt you to choose whether to erase the eSIM as well. If you're staying with the same carrier on a new device and want to transfer your plan, don't erase it — contact your carrier first. If you're selling the phone outright, erasing the eSIM is typically the right call, though your carrier situation may affect that decision.

Phones with a physical SIM card should have the card removed before handing the device over.
