How to Clear History on Android: Browser, Search, App & Call Records Explained

Android devices store several types of history across different apps and system features — and "clearing history" means something different depending on which type you're dealing with. Understanding where your data lives, and what clearing it actually does, helps you make informed decisions rather than accidentally wiping something you wanted to keep.

What "History" Actually Means on Android

When most people say they want to clear history on Android, they're usually referring to one of these distinct categories:

  • Browser history — websites visited in Chrome, Firefox, or another browser
  • Google Search history — queries saved to your Google account
  • App usage history — records of which apps you've opened and when
  • Call history — logs of incoming, outgoing, and missed calls
  • Google Maps history — places searched and routes navigated
  • YouTube watch history — videos watched while signed in

Each of these is stored differently — some locally on your device, some tied to your Google account, and some in both places simultaneously. That distinction matters a lot when you're deciding what to clear and why.

How to Clear Browser History on Android 🔍

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and tap the three-dot menu (top right)
  2. Select History, then tap Clear browsing data
  3. Choose a time range — options typically include last hour, 24 hours, 7 days, 4 weeks, or all time
  4. Check Browsing history, and optionally Cookies and site data or Cached images and files
  5. Tap Clear data

Clearing browsing history removes the list of visited URLs from your device. However, if you're signed into Chrome with a Google account and sync is enabled, this history may also exist on other synced devices. You'd need to clear it from Google's My Activity page to remove it from your account entirely.

Other Browsers

Samsung Internet, Firefox, Opera, and other Android browsers each have their own history menus — typically found inside the browser's settings or main menu. The steps vary slightly, but the principle is the same: local history clears from the device; account-linked history requires clearing from the account level too.

How to Clear Google Search History on Android

Your Google Search history is tied to your Google account, not just your device. Simply uninstalling an app or clearing a browser won't remove it.

To manage it properly:

  1. Open the Google app or go to myactivity.google.com
  2. Tap your profile photo → Manage your Google Account
  3. Go to Data & PrivacyMy Activity
  4. Filter by product (Search, YouTube, Maps, etc.) and delete individual items or ranges

You can also turn off Web & App Activity entirely from this menu, which stops Google from saving future search history to your account. This affects all devices signed into that account.

Clearing App History and Recent Apps

Android keeps a recent apps list (the overview screen you get by swiping up or pressing the square button). This isn't the same as a usage log — it's just a visual cache of recently opened apps.

To clear it: swipe away individual apps from the recents screen, or tap Clear All if your device has that button (Samsung, OnePlus, and others often include it; stock Android varies).

App usage data — which apps you've used and for how long — is stored in Settings → Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls (or equivalent on your device). This is informational and can't typically be "cleared" the same way browsing data can, though you can reset certain screen time statistics depending on your Android version and manufacturer.

How to Clear Call History on Android

Call history is stored locally on your device in the Phone app.

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Go to the Recents tab
  3. Tap the three-dot menuCall History or Delete (varies by device)
  4. Select individual entries or choose to delete all

On Samsung devices, the path is slightly different — you'll find history options inside the Logs tab. On stock Android (Pixel phones), the option is under the Recents menu within the dialer.

Worth noting: if you use a carrier or VoIP service that logs calls server-side, clearing your local call history won't affect those records.

Clearing Google Maps and YouTube History

Google Maps 🗺️

In the Maps app: tap your profile photoManage your Google AccountData & PrivacyMy Activity, then filter by Maps. Alternatively, inside Maps go to Settings → Maps history to view and delete location searches and directions.

YouTube

Open YouTube → tap your profile photo → Manage your Google Account, or go directly to YouTube Settings → History & Privacy to clear watch history and search history. These settings sync across devices linked to your account.

Local vs. Account-Level History: The Key Variable

History TypeStored LocallyStored in Google Account
Chrome browsing (no sync)
Chrome browsing (sync on)
Google Search
Call history
Google MapsPartially
YouTube watch history

This table captures why "clearing history" isn't one action — it depends entirely on where the data lives.

What Actually Determines Your Experience

Several variables shape how this process works for your specific situation:

  • Android version — Stock Android 13+ handles privacy settings differently than Android 10 or manufacturer-modified versions
  • Device manufacturer — Samsung One UI, OnePlus OxygenOS, and Xiaomi MIUI all place these settings in different locations with different labels
  • Google account sync settings — Whether sync is enabled dramatically changes where your data lives
  • Apps in use — Third-party browsers, launchers, and search apps may store history independently

Someone using a Pixel phone on stock Android with no Google sync will have a very different clearing process than someone using a Samsung Galaxy with full Google account sync and Samsung's own browser and apps running alongside Google's.

The right approach depends entirely on which type of history you want removed, whether it's stored locally or tied to an account, and how your specific device and apps are configured.
