How to Delete Shortcuts on Any Device or Platform

Shortcuts are everywhere — on your desktop, in your file manager, pinned to your taskbar, saved in your browser, or embedded in your keyboard settings. They're designed to save time, but over time they pile up, become outdated, or simply clutter your workflow. Deleting them sounds simple, but the right method depends entirely on where the shortcut lives and what operating system or app you're using.

What Is a Shortcut, Exactly?

Before jumping into deletion, it helps to understand what you're actually removing. A shortcut is a pointer — a small file or link that references something else (an app, folder, website, or command) without being the thing itself. This means deleting a shortcut does not delete the original file or program. That's true across Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and most browsers.

The exception worth knowing: some "shortcuts" are actually aliases or symlinks (especially on macOS and Linux), which behave slightly differently under the hood, though the end result of deleting them is the same — the original stays intact.

Deleting Shortcuts on Windows 🖥️

Windows is where shortcut clutter tends to accumulate fastest, particularly on the desktop.

Desktop Shortcuts

  • Right-click the shortcut icon and select Delete, or select it and press the Delete key.
  • This sends the shortcut to the Recycle Bin — it's not permanently gone until you empty the bin.
  • To permanently delete without sending to the bin, use Shift + Delete.

Taskbar Shortcuts

  • Right-click the pinned icon on the taskbar and select Unpin from taskbar. This removes the pin but doesn't affect the actual app.

Start Menu Shortcuts

  • Right-click the app tile or entry and choose Unpin from Start or Unpin from taskbar depending on where it appears.

File Explorer Shortcuts (Quick Access)

  • In File Explorer's left panel, right-click any pinned folder under Quick Access and select Unpin from Quick Access.

Keyboard Shortcuts (Hotkeys)

  • These are set inside individual applications or through Windows Settings. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard or within the app's own preferences to remove or reassign them.

Deleting Shortcuts on macOS

Apple calls shortcuts aliases, but the behavior is nearly identical.

  • Desktop aliases: Right-click and select Move to Trash, or drag to the Trash. Original file is unaffected.
  • Dock shortcuts: Right-click the icon in the Dock, hover over Options, and select Remove from Dock.
  • Finder sidebar: Right-click any item in the sidebar and select Remove from Sidebar.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Found under System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts. Select any custom shortcut and click the minus (−) button to remove it.

Deleting Shortcuts on Android and iOS 📱

Mobile operating systems use the term "shortcut" to describe home screen app icons and widgets.

Android

  • Long-press the shortcut icon on your home screen. A menu or drag option appears — select Remove or drag it to the Remove/Delete zone at the top or bottom of the screen (varies by manufacturer and launcher).
  • This removes the shortcut from your home screen but does not uninstall the app.

iOS (iPhone/iPad)

  • Long-press the app icon until the icons start jiggling (or a quick-action menu appears).
  • Tap Remove App, then choose Remove from Home Screen to delete the shortcut while keeping the app installed, or Delete App to fully uninstall it.
  • The distinction between "remove from home screen" and "delete app" is an important one many users miss.

Deleting Browser Shortcuts and Bookmarks

Browsers use the word "shortcut" in a few different ways:

  • Bookmarks/Favorites: Right-click the bookmark in your toolbar or bookmarks manager and select Delete or Remove.
  • New Tab page shortcuts: In Chrome, hover over the shortcut tile on the new tab page and click the three-dot menu → Remove. In Firefox, right-click a Top Sites tile and select Dismiss.
  • Desktop shortcuts to websites: These are standard OS shortcuts and can be deleted the same way as any desktop shortcut on Windows or macOS.

Deleting Shortcuts in Productivity Apps

Apps like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, and many others let you create custom keyboard shortcuts. These live inside the app's settings — typically under Preferences → Keyboard Shortcuts or a similar menu path. Removing them usually involves selecting the shortcut entry and pressing a clear or delete button within that settings panel.

Some apps store shortcuts in config files, which means users comfortable with manual file editing can remove them at the source — but for most users, the in-app interface is the right place to manage this.

The Variable That Changes Everything

The steps above are accurate as general guidance, but a few factors can shift how this plays out for any individual user:

VariableWhy It Matters
OS versionWindows 10 vs. 11, iOS 16 vs. 17 — menu labels and locations change between versions
Device manufacturerAndroid behavior varies significantly between Samsung, Google Pixel, and OnePlus launchers
App versionProductivity apps update their settings menus frequently
User permissionsOn managed devices (work or school), some shortcuts may be locked by an administrator
Custom launchersThird-party Android launchers have their own shortcut management entirely

A shortcut that's simple to remove on a personal Windows 11 machine might require different steps on a school-issued Chromebook or a heavily customized Android launcher. The method is always somewhere — it's just a matter of knowing which layer of the system you're working in.
