How to Build a Minecraft Portal: Nether, End, and Beyond

Portals are some of the most useful structures in Minecraft. They let you travel between dimensions, cover enormous distances in seconds, and unlock entirely new gameplay experiences. But building them correctly — especially for the first time — involves more than just placing a few blocks. The type of portal, the materials required, and how you activate it all vary depending on which dimension you're trying to reach.

The Two Main Portal Types in Minecraft

Minecraft has two primary portals you'll build from scratch:

• Nether Portal — connects the Overworld to the Nether
• End Portal — connects the Overworld to The End

There's also a ruined portal (a naturally spawning, broken Nether portal you can repair) and the exit portal inside The End, but those aren't built from scratch.

The Nether Portal is the most accessible portal in the game and the first most players build.

Materials Required

• Obsidian — minimum 10 blocks (for the smallest valid frame), up to 14 for a full rectangular frame

Obsidian is created when flowing water contacts a lava source block. You'll need a diamond or netherite pickaxe to mine it — any other tool destroys the block without dropping it.

Frame Dimensions

The portal frame must form a rectangular shape with hollow interior space. Valid sizes range from:

How to Build It Step by Step

1. Place 2 obsidian blocks side by side on the ground as your base
2. Stack 4 obsidian blocks vertically on each end of the base (creating two columns)
3. Connect the tops of both columns with 2 more obsidian blocks
4. You should now have a rectangular frame with an open interior

Activating the Nether Portal

Once the frame is complete, use a flint and steel (or a fire charge) to ignite the inside of the frame. Click any interior block surface. The portal will fill with a purple, animated texture — you're ready to travel.

Standing inside the portal for approximately 4 seconds triggers the dimension transition.

Tips for Nether Portal Placement

• Build your portal on a flat, open surface in the Nether when you first arrive — avoid building directly over lava lakes
• Distance in the Nether equals 8× the distance in the Overworld, making Nether travel extremely efficient for long-distance movement
• Linked portals can behave unpredictably if multiple portals exist nearby — spacing them at least 128 blocks apart in the Overworld (16 blocks in the Nether) reduces linking issues

The End Portal is fundamentally different — you cannot build a functional End Portal from scratch in Survival mode. The 12 End Portal Frame blocks required are not craftable or obtainable without commands or creative mode.

What You Need to Do Instead

In Survival, you find and activate an existing End Portal inside a Stronghold, which generates underground. Steps:

1. Craft Eyes of Ender (blaze powder + ender pearl)
2. Throw them into the air — they float toward the nearest Stronghold
3. Follow them until they descend into the ground, marking the Stronghold location
4. Navigate through the Stronghold to find the End Portal room
5. Place an Eye of Ender in each of the 12 End Portal Frame blocks (some may already be filled)
6. When all 12 are filled, the portal activates

In Creative Mode or With Commands

If you're building in Creative or using commands, you can place End Portal Frame blocks directly and fill them with Eyes of Ender to create a working End Portal wherever you choose.

Variables That Affect Your Portal-Building Experience

Game version and edition matter. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition handle portal linking differently, and some portal behaviors — particularly around chunk loading and multi-portal networks — vary between them. Custom portal mods (Java only) expand options significantly.

World seed and Stronghold location affect how long it takes to reach an End Portal. Some seeds place Strongholds close to spawn; others require significant travel.

Resource progression is the biggest gating factor for the Nether Portal. If you're early in a survival world without diamonds, reaching obsidian requires either careful lava manipulation or significant underground exploration.

Server and multiplayer environments introduce complications around portal ownership, griefer protection, and whether admins have restricted Nether or End access entirely.

Difficulty and mob density change how dangerous portal construction is — building in the Nether or navigating to a Stronghold carries real risk on harder settings.
