How to Build a Portal to the Ender Dragon in Minecraft

If you've been searching for how to "build" a portal to the Ender Dragon, there's an important distinction worth clearing up first — and understanding it will save you a lot of confusion and wasted resources.

There Is No Craftable End Portal 🐉

Unlike the Nether Portal, which players construct by arranging obsidian blocks and igniting them with flint and steel, the End Portal cannot be built by players in Survival mode. It is a structure that generates naturally in the game world and must be found and activated rather than constructed from scratch.

That said, the process of reaching the Ender Dragon through that portal involves several real steps — gathering materials, locating the structure, and completing the activation sequence. Each of those steps has variables that change significantly depending on your setup and playstyle.

What the End Portal Actually Is

The End Portal is a frame-based structure made of 12 End Portal Frame blocks arranged in a square ring. It generates inside a Stronghold — an underground dungeon structure that spawns in every standard Minecraft world.

The frame blocks themselves cannot be obtained in Survival mode through normal gameplay. They exist only as part of the generated structure. What players do control is inserting the activation item — Eyes of Ender — into each frame block to open the portal.

In Creative mode, you can place End Portal Frame blocks freely and construct the portal manually, which is why tutorials sometimes describe "building" one. In Survival, you're completing a partially activated structure, not building from the ground up.

Step 1 — Craft Eyes of Ender

Before you can activate the End Portal, you need Eyes of Ender. Each one requires:

• 1 Blaze Powder — crafted from Blaze Rods dropped by Blazes in Nether Fortresses

Step 2 — Locate the Stronghold

Once you have Eyes of Ender, throw one into the air. It will float in the direction of the nearest Stronghold and then fall. Follow its trajectory, repeating the process from new positions to triangulate the location. Eyes of Ender have a chance to shatter on each use, so carrying extras is standard practice.

The Stronghold generates underground, typically under villages or in varied biome clusters depending on your world seed. When the Eye begins floating downward instead of forward, you're above the structure — start digging.

Step 3 — Find the Portal Room

Strongholds are labyrinthine. Inside, you'll navigate through stone brick corridors, libraries, prison cells, and various rooms. The room you're looking for contains:

• The End Portal frame (the 12-block ring)
• A silverfish spawner in the center
• Lava pools around the structure

Silverfish can spawn from the spawner and from some stone bricks in the Stronghold itself. Coming prepared with weapons and armor is strongly recommended.

Step 4 — Activate the Portal

Stand inside or around the End Portal frame and insert an Eye of Ender into each empty frame block by right-clicking (or your platform's interact button). The order doesn't matter — fill every frame block that lacks an Eye.

When the final Eye is inserted, the portal activates immediately: a black void fills the frame and a rushing sound plays. Step into it to be transported to The End, where the Ender Dragon encounter begins.

How This Differs in Creative Mode

In Creative mode, players can:

• Obtain End Portal Frame blocks from the inventory
• Place them in the correct 3×3 ring configuration (with the frame blocks facing inward)
• Insert Eyes of Ender to activate

The frame orientation matters. Each block must face toward the center of the ring — incorrect placement results in a frame that won't activate. This is the closest thing to "building" the portal from nothing.
