How to Edit Your Work Outfit in Sims 4: A Complete Guide

Changing what your Sim wears to the office isn't always obvious, especially if you're new to the game or returning after a break. The work outfit slot sits separately from everyday, formal, and athletic wear — which means editing it requires a slightly different approach than dressing your Sim for a night out. Here's exactly how it works.

Understanding Outfit Categories in Sims 4

The Sims 4 organizes clothing into distinct outfit categories, each tied to specific in-game situations. These categories include:

  • Everyday
  • Formal
  • Athletic
  • Sleepwear
  • Party
  • Swimwear
  • Work / Career
  • Cold Weather / Hot Weather (with Seasons expansion)

The Work outfit category is where your Sim's career-related clothing lives. Depending on your career track, this may be a uniform assigned by the game, a customizable outfit, or a mix of both. Not all careers give you full control — and that distinction matters a lot when you're trying to make edits.

How to Access the Work Outfit in Create-A-Sim

Method 1: Through the Main Menu (Before Starting a Save)

When creating a new Sim, you can access all outfit categories — including Work — directly in Create-A-Sim (CAS). Look for the outfit category tabs near the bottom of the screen. Click the briefcase or work-related icon to switch to that slot, then dress your Sim the same way you would for any other category.

Method 2: In an Active Save File

Once you're in a live game, you have two main options:

Option A — Using a Mirror or Dresser Click on any mirror or dresser in your Sim's home and select "Change Outfit." This opens a simplified version of CAS where you can navigate to the Work outfit tab and make changes. This is the most common in-game method.

Option B — Using the "Manage Households" Shortcut Press Escape > Manage Worlds > Manage Households, locate your Sim, and click the pencil/edit icon to open the full CAS view. From there you can freely edit the Work outfit tab. Note that some players prefer this method because it gives access to the complete CAS interface.

Option C — Cheats (Full CAS Access) 🎮 If you want unrestricted access to CAS at any time, you can use the cas.fulleditmode cheat:

  1. Open the cheat console with Ctrl + Shift + C (PC/Mac) or hold all four shoulder buttons on console
  2. Type testingcheats true and press Enter
  3. Type cas.fulleditmode and press Enter
  4. Then Shift+Click your Sim and select "Modify in CAS"

This unlocks full editing, including traits, body shape, and all outfit slots — including Work.

When the Game Assigns a Uniform

Some career tracks in Sims 4 automatically assign a uniform that replaces or partially locks the Work outfit slot. Careers that commonly do this include:

CareerUniform Behavior
DoctorFull uniform assigned
DetectiveFull uniform assigned
ScientistLab coat assigned
Military (StrangerVille)Full uniform assigned
Business, Tech, CulinaryGenerally customizable

For uniform-based careers, the game overrides your chosen outfit with the career uniform when your Sim goes to work — even if you've edited the Work slot. This is intentional game behavior, not a bug.

If you want to change the appearance of a uniform, mods are typically required (more on that below).

Editing Work Outfits With Mods

The base game has real limits when it comes to career uniforms. If you want full control, the Sims 4 modding community has created tools to help:

  • MC Command Center (MCCC) — One of the most widely used mods, which includes outfit-related controls
  • Outfit-specific mods — Custom content (CC) that replaces uniform meshes entirely
  • UI Cheats Extension — Doesn't directly edit outfits but pairs well with CAS cheats

If you're playing on PC or Mac, mods are supported through the official Mods folder. Console players (PS4, PS5, Xbox) do not have mod support, so you're limited to base game and expansion pack tools only.

Variables That Affect What You Can Change

Not every player will have the same experience editing work outfits. The outcome depends on several factors:

  • Which career your Sim is in — uniform vs. non-uniform tracks behave differently
  • Which expansions or game packs you own — some packs add new career outfits and restrictions
  • Whether you're on PC/Mac vs. console — mod availability changes significantly
  • Active cheats or mods installed — these expand or sometimes complicate what CAS allows
  • Game version — patches occasionally change how CAS or career clothing behaves

A player in the base-game Business career with no mods has a very different editing experience than someone running the Doctor career with MCCC installed. 🖥️

The Outfit Slot vs. What Actually Appears at Work

One thing that trips up a lot of players: editing the Work outfit slot doesn't always mean that's what your Sim wears on the job. Uniform-assigned careers will still show the game's default uniform during work hours. The slot you edited may only appear when your Sim is heading to or returning from work, or when explicitly switching outfits at home.

Whether that limitation matters — and what workaround makes sense — depends on your specific career choice, your platform, and how much visual control you actually need over your Sim's professional look. ✂️
