Where to Download Fortnite: Every Platform Explained

Fortnite is free to play, but finding the right download isn't always straightforward — especially since Epic Games removed the title from some storefronts and added it to others over the years. The game runs on a wider range of devices than most players realize, and where you get it depends entirely on what you're playing on.

How Fortnite Distribution Works

Unlike most games tied to a single storefront, Fortnite is published directly by Epic Games, the studio that both develops the game and operates the Epic Games Store. This matters because Epic maintains more control over how and where the game is distributed compared to third-party titles.

The game is free to download across all platforms, with revenue generated through the in-game Item Shop (cosmetics, skins, emotes). There's no paywall to access core gameplay modes like Battle Royale.

Downloading Fortnite by Platform 🎮

PC (Windows)

On Windows, Fortnite is downloaded through the Epic Games Launcher, available at epicgames.com. The process:

  1. Download and install the Epic Games Launcher
  2. Create or log into a free Epic Games account
  3. Search for Fortnite and click Get
  4. The launcher handles installation and future updates

Fortnite is not available through Steam or other third-party PC storefronts. The Epic Games Launcher is the only supported path on Windows.

Minimum system requirements (general benchmarks — always verify current specs on Epic's site):

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit or later
  • GPU: A card supporting DirectX 11 or higher
  • RAM: At least 8GB recommended for stable performance
  • Storage: 30GB+ of free space (the game updates frequently and install size grows over time)

Mac

Fortnite was removed from macOS for a period following the legal dispute between Epic and Apple in 2020. As of 2024, Fortnite returned to Mac via the Epic Games website for devices running macOS Ventura or later on Apple Silicon (M1 and newer chips). Intel-based Macs are not supported in the current version.

Download is handled through the same Epic Games Launcher on Mac, from epicgames.com.

iPhone and iPad (iOS)

Fortnite's history on iOS is complicated. After the 2020 dispute, it was removed from the Apple App Store globally.

  • In the EU, Fortnite returned to iOS in 2024 through Epic's own iOS app marketplace, made possible by Apple's compliance with the EU Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to allow third-party app distribution in European Union countries.
  • Outside the EU, iOS users can access Fortnite via Xbox Cloud Gaming through a Safari browser — no download required, but a Game Pass Ultimate subscription is needed and gameplay depends on internet speed.

Direct native installation on iOS outside the EU is not currently available through the App Store.

Android

On Android, Fortnite is not available through the Google Play Store as a standard listing (though that relationship has also seen changes over time — check Epic's site for current status). The traditional installation method on Android is:

  • Downloading the Epic Games app directly from epicgames.com as an APK
  • Enabling installation from unknown sources in your Android settings
  • Installing through the Epic app, which then manages Fortnite updates

Some Android devices may also access Fortnite through the Samsung Galaxy Store, depending on the device and region.

Android users comfortable with sideloading (installing apps outside official storefronts) will find this process manageable. Those unfamiliar with APK installation may find it requires a few extra steps compared to a typical app install.

PlayStation (PS4 / PS5)

On PlayStation consoles, Fortnite is available directly through the PlayStation Store — no additional launcher needed. Search "Fortnite" in the store, select it, and download. Because it's free, no purchase is required; you'll just need a PSN account.

Xbox (Xbox One / Xbox Series X|S)

Same process as PlayStation: search for Fortnite in the Microsoft Store on your Xbox console or through the Xbox app. Free to download with an Xbox account.

Nintendo Switch

Fortnite is available on Switch through the Nintendo eShop. Search the eShop directly on the console. A Nintendo Account is required; Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play Fortnite's free modes.

Supported Streaming Options ☁️

For devices that can't run Fortnite natively — including some iOS devices outside the EU, low-spec PCs, or certain Smart TVs — Xbox Cloud Gaming (part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) streams the game through a browser without a local install. Performance depends heavily on your internet connection speed and latency, making this option best suited for users with a stable, fast connection.

Key Variables That Affect Your Download Path

FactorWhy It Matters
Device and OS versionmacOS Intel Macs, older Android versions, and non-EU iPhones have limited or no native install options
RegionEU users on iOS have the Epic Games app option; other regions do not
Comfort with sideloadingAndroid installation requires steps beyond a standard app store download
Internet speedCloud streaming is viable only with reliable bandwidth; local install is preferable otherwise
Storage spaceFortnite's install footprint is substantial and grows with updates

The Variable Nobody Can Answer for You

Which of these paths is right depends on which device you're actually playing on, your OS version, your region, and whether you're open to methods like sideloading or browser-based streaming. A PC gamer and an iPhone user in different countries are looking at meaningfully different processes — and what's straightforward on one setup involves extra steps on another.
