How to Customize Your Character in Fortnite

Fortnite gives players one of the most flexible character customization systems in any battle royale game. Whether you're playing on PC, console, or mobile, the process works the same way — but what's available to you depends on a mix of factors that vary from player to player.

Where Character Customization Happens: The Locker

All character customization in Fortnite takes place in the Locker, accessible from the main lobby screen before you enter a match. You'll find the Locker tab at the top of the screen (the icon looks like a hanger or wardrobe, depending on your platform).

Inside the Locker, you can customize several distinct slots:

SlotWhat It Controls
OutfitYour character's full appearance/skin
Back BlingItem worn on your character's back
Harvesting ToolYour pickaxe skin
GliderHow you deploy when dropping into the map
ContrailTrail effect visible during the drop
EmotesDances and gestures triggered in-game
WrapSkin applied to weapons and vehicles
Loading ScreenCosmetic shown during game load
MusicLobby background music
SprayGraffiti-style tags you can place in-game
EmoticonSmall expressive icons used in chat
BannerProfile icon and color shown to other players

Each slot is independent. Swapping your outfit doesn't reset your back bling or emotes.

How to Change an Item in a Slot

  1. Open the Locker from the main lobby.
  2. Click or tap the slot you want to customize (e.g., Outfit).
  3. A grid of your owned items appears. Select the one you want.
  4. Confirm the selection — it auto-saves.

Changes take effect immediately in your next match. There's no save button required.

Outfits: The Core of Your Loadout 🎮

Outfits (commonly called "skins") are the most visible customization element. Fortnite has hundreds of them, ranging from simple soldier looks to elaborate licensed characters from movies, games, and pop culture.

Outfits are acquired through several paths:

  • Battle Pass — Each season's paid pass unlocks a set of outfits as you earn XP and progress through tiers.
  • Item Shop — A rotating daily and weekly shop where individual outfits and bundles can be purchased with V-Bucks (Fortnite's in-game currency).
  • Free rewards — Occasional challenges, events, or promotions grant outfits at no cost.
  • Starter Packs — Lower-cost bundles sometimes available for new or returning players.
  • Default skins — Every player has access to a set of free default outfits, no purchase needed.

Some outfits include built-in customization options — called Styles — that let you change colors, toggle alternate versions, or unlock progressive upgrades by completing in-game tasks. Not all outfits have styles; it depends on the specific skin.

Building a Preset Loadout

Fortnite supports Locker Presets, which let you save entire customized combinations as a named slot. This is useful if you like switching between themed setups — say, one loadout built around a dark aesthetic and another around a colorful seasonal theme.

To create a preset:

  1. Customize all your slots as desired.
  2. Select the Preset option within the Locker.
  3. Save the current combination with a name.

You can save multiple presets and switch between them quickly before matches.

Wraps: Extending Customization to Weapons

Wraps are a customization layer that skins the weapons you pick up during a match. They don't change weapon performance — they're purely visual. A wrap applied in your Locker will appear on eligible weapons automatically when you find them on the map.

Some wraps are animated, adding motion effects to your weapon skins. Others are static patterns or themed designs.

What You Can't Customize (and Why It Matters)

Fortnite doesn't allow direct stat modification through cosmetics. Your outfit, harvesting tool, or wrap has zero effect on gameplay mechanics — movement speed, damage, shield capacity, and so on are identical across all cosmetic choices. This is a deliberate design decision to keep the game fair.

You also can't freely mix and match every combination. Certain back blings are exclusive to specific outfits and can only be unlocked or used in certain contexts, though Epic has loosened some of these restrictions over time, allowing many back blings to be used across outfits.

The Variables That Shape Your Customization Experience 🎨

What's actually available in your Locker depends on factors specific to your account and playstyle:

  • Account age and history — Long-time players may have outfits that are no longer available in the shop.
  • Battle Pass participation — Players who purchase and complete seasonal Battle Passes have access to that season's full cosmetic lineup.
  • V-Bucks spending — Item Shop purchases are discretionary; two players on the same patch can have completely different wardrobes.
  • Platform — Customization features are identical across platforms, but navigating the Locker UI varies slightly between a controller, keyboard/mouse, or touchscreen.
  • Region and promotions — Some real-world promotions (like those tied to specific brands or events) may have different availability depending on geography.

Collaboration and Licensed Skins

A significant portion of Fortnite's outfit catalog involves licensed crossovers — characters from Marvel, DC, Star Wars, gaming franchises, musicians, and athletes. These are typically time-limited appearances in the Item Shop. Once a collaboration window closes, those outfits may not return for months or at all, making availability unpredictable.

Whether chasing a specific licensed skin fits your approach — or whether you prefer building your collection through the Battle Pass — depends entirely on what you value in the game and how often you play.
