How to Change Your Name in Clash of Clans

Clash of Clans lets you personalize your in-game identity, and your player name is one of the most visible parts of that. Whether you picked something embarrassing years ago or just want a fresh start, changing your name is possible — but there are rules, limits, and a few catches worth knowing before you dive in.

Your First Name Change Is Free

When you first change your name in Clash of Clans, Supercell doesn't charge you anything. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open Clash of Clans and go to your village
  2. Tap the Settings gear icon (top right of the screen)
  3. Tap "More Settings"
  4. Select "Change Name"
  5. Type your new name and tap "Change Name" to confirm

Your name updates immediately. No cooldown, no gems required — for that first change.

Every Change After That Costs Gems 💎

After your free name change, subsequent changes cost 500 gems each. That's a meaningful amount, especially for newer players who haven't accumulated gems through gameplay or purchases.

This gem cost applies regardless of how long it's been since your last change. There's no waiting period that resets the price back to free. Once you've used your freebie, 500 gems is the standing rate for every future rename.

Name Rules You Need to Know

Clash of Clans has content filters and character restrictions that affect what names are allowed:

  • Length: Names must be between 2 and 15 characters
  • Allowed characters: Letters, numbers, and spaces (no special symbols or punctuation)
  • Profanity and inappropriate content: Supercell's filter will reject names it flags as offensive or inappropriate
  • Spaces: You can use spaces, but names can't start or end with one

If your chosen name gets rejected, it's usually because it triggered the content filter or exceeded the character limit. Try a variation or a completely different name.

What Changes — and What Doesn't

When you change your name, your display name updates everywhere — in your village, in Clan chat, in war logs, in leaderboards. Your clanmates will see the new name immediately.

What doesn't change:

  • Your Player Tag (the # code tied to your account permanently)
  • Your progress, trophies, buildings, troops, and resources
  • Your Clan membership or rank

Your Player Tag is the permanent identifier for your account. Even if you rename yourself a dozen times, your tag stays the same. This is also how friends can find you after a rename — share your tag, not just your name.

The Under-15 Exception 🎮

Players who registered their account with an age under 15 have additional restrictions on name changes. Supercell applies stricter content moderation for younger players, and in some cases the name change feature may behave differently or require parental/guardian consent depending on regional settings.

If you're running into unexpected blocks on the name change screen, account age settings could be a factor.

Changing Your Name Across Multiple Devices

Your Clash of Clans account is tied to your Supercell ID (or your linked Google Play / Apple Game Center account). This means:

  • Your name change applies to your account, not your device
  • If you play on multiple devices, the new name shows everywhere automatically
  • You don't need to change your name separately per device

If you're not seeing the name change option, make sure you're actually logged in to your account and not a guest profile. Guest profiles have limited functionality, including restricted access to account settings.

Contacting Supercell Support for Name Issues

There are edge cases where the in-game rename tool won't solve your problem:

  • Your account was hacked and someone changed your name
  • Your name violates a rule you weren't aware of and your account has been flagged
  • You're locked out of the name change section due to a bug or account issue

In these situations, Supercell's in-game support system (accessible via Settings → Help & Support) is the right channel. Support agents can manually review and correct names in cases where the standard tool can't help. Response times and outcomes vary depending on your situation and account history.

Factors That Affect Your Experience

Not everyone's name change process looks identical. A few variables shift how straightforward this is for any given player:

FactorHow It Affects Things
Gems on handDetermines whether repeat changes are practical
Account ageUnder-15 accounts may face additional restrictions
Account typeGuest vs. Supercell ID accounts have different capabilities
Name contentSupercell's filter varies by region and gets updated
Device/OS versionOlder app versions may not display all settings correctly

The gem cost is the biggest practical variable for most players. 500 gems is easy to overlook if you're an established player sitting on a stockpile, but it's a real decision point for someone newer to the game.

How Often You'll Actually Want to Rename

Most players change their name once — maybe twice — over the life of their account. The free first change covers the typical use case. The 500-gem cost after that is deliberately set to discourage casual or frequent renaming, which keeps the game environment more stable for clans and leaderboard tracking.

Whether that cost feels reasonable or steep depends on how you play, how you've accumulated gems, and how much your in-game identity matters to your overall experience in the game.
