Where To Find All TMs in Pokémon Moon: A Complete Location Guide

Technical Machines — TMs — are one of the most powerful tools in any Pokémon trainer's kit. In Pokémon Moon, there are 100 TMs scattered across the Alola region, hidden in various locations, sold by vendors, or rewarded for specific in-game actions. Knowing where to look saves hours of backtracking across the four islands.

What Are TMs and How Do They Work in Pokémon Moon?

Unlike older games in the series, TMs in Pokémon Moon (and the entire Generation VI/VII era) are reusable. Once you pick one up, you can teach it to as many compatible Pokémon as you like — no consumable limit. This makes hunting every TM worthwhile even early in the game.

Each TM teaches a single move. Some are offensive, others support or status-based. Compatibility depends entirely on the Pokémon's species, so a TM that works on your Incineroar may not work on your Wishiwashi.

How TMs Are Obtained in Pokémon Moon

There are four main acquisition methods:

  • Found in the overworld — hidden in tall grass, on beaches, in caves, or sitting visibly as item balls
  • Purchased from Poké Marts — certain TMs are available for purchase after specific story milestones
  • Rewarded by NPCs — clearing trials, completing fetch quests, or talking to specific characters
  • Post-battle rewards — a smaller number come from defeating certain Trainers or completing specific encounters

TMs Obtained Through Special Methods 🎮

Several TMs require specific conditions rather than exploration:

  • TM32 (Double Team) — Route 10, requires Machamp Poke Ride to push the boulder
  • TM37 (Sandstorm) — Haina Desert, requires navigating the maze correctly
  • TM50 (Overheat) — Defeat Kahuna Hapu
  • TM66 (Payback) — Po Town
  • TM79 (Frost Breath) — Lanakila Mountain
  • TM91 (Flash Cannon) — Malie City

Many late-game TMs only become purchasable at the Pokémon League Poké Mart after becoming Champion — including TM15 (Hyper Beam), TM38 (Fire Blast), TM52 (Focus Blast), and several others. If a TM isn't appearing for sale, story progression is usually the reason.

Variables That Affect Your TM Strategy

Where you are in the story is the single biggest factor. Alola is gated by island challenge completion — most Poni Island TMs are completely inaccessible until mid-to-late game, and some Poké Mart TMs don't appear until after specific kahuna battles.

Your team composition changes which TMs are worth prioritizing. A player running a physical attacker-heavy team will prioritize TMs like Earthquake (TM26), Rock Slide (TM80), and U-turn (TM89). A Special Attack-focused team shifts attention to Psychic (TM29), Energy Ball (TM53), and Shadow Ball (TM30).

Poke Ride access determines whether certain hidden TMs are reachable at all — some item balls are blocked by rocks requiring Machamp Ride, or bodies of water requiring Lapras Ride.

How complete your Pokédex is also plays a role for players aiming to build competitive-ready Pokémon — knowing which TMs are available vs. which require post-game access shapes how you structure your team-building before the Elite Four.

Every trainer's optimal TM collection in Pokémon Moon looks a little different depending on which Pokémon they're running, how far through the story they are, and what battle style they prefer.
