How to Join a Minecraft Realm: Everything You Need to Know
Minecraft Realms makes multiplayer simple — no port forwarding, no server hosting knowledge required. But the process of actually joining one depends on a few things: which version of Minecraft you're running, whether you own the game on the right platform, and how the Realm owner has set things up. Here's a clear breakdown of how it all works.
What Is a Minecraft Realm?
A Minecraft Realm is a private, subscription-based multiplayer server hosted by Mojang (Microsoft). The person who pays for the Realm — the Realm owner — controls who gets access. Up to 10 players can be online at once on a standard Realm, with a whitelist of up to 11 players total (including the owner).
There are two separate Realms products:
| Product | Platform | Player Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft: Java Edition Realms | PC (Java) | 10 players online |
| Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Realms | Console, Mobile, Win 10/11 | 10 players online |
These two versions are not cross-compatible. A Java Realm cannot be joined from Bedrock, and vice versa. This is one of the most common sources of confusion when players try to join a friend's Realm and can't find it.
How the Invitation System Works
You can only join a Realm if the owner invites you. There's no public directory of Realms, and you can't search for them. The owner needs your Minecraft username (Java) or your Microsoft/Xbox gamertag (Bedrock) to send an invite.
Once invited, you'll see a notification inside the game. You don't need a separate link or code in most cases — though Bedrock Realms do support a Realm invite code, which is a short alphanumeric string the owner can share. This is useful when inviting someone you're not already friends with in-game.
Joining a Realm on Java Edition 🎮
- Launch Minecraft: Java Edition
- From the main menu, select Minecraft Realms
- If you've been invited, the Realm will appear in your list with a pending invite notification
- Click the Realm name and select Accept to join the whitelist
- From then on, the Realm appears in your list whenever it's online — click it and hit Play
Your Minecraft account must be a paid Java Edition account linked to a Microsoft account. Free or demo accounts cannot access Realms.
Joining a Realm on Bedrock Edition
Bedrock covers a wide range of platforms — Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. The process is consistent across all of them:
- Open Minecraft (Bedrock)
- From the main menu, go to Play, then select the Friends tab
- Pending Realm invites appear here under Joinable Realms
- Click or tap the Realm to join
Alternatively, if you have an invite code:
- Go to Play → Friends tab
- Scroll down and tap Join Realm
- Enter the invite code and confirm
On console platforms like Xbox or PlayStation, your Microsoft account needs to be signed in and online multiplayer must be enabled through your platform's subscription service (Xbox Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus, depending on the platform). Without an active subscription, online play — including Realms — is blocked at the platform level, not the Minecraft level.
Common Reasons You Can't Join a Realm
Even when you've been invited, a few variables can block access:
- Wrong game version: You're on Java trying to join a Bedrock Realm, or vice versa
- Outdated Minecraft version: Realms typically require the latest release; running an older version can prevent connection
- Platform multiplayer restrictions: Parental controls or a lapsed online subscription (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) can silently block Realms
- Microsoft account issues: On Bedrock, your account needs to have multiplayer enabled in the Microsoft Family Settings dashboard — this is especially relevant for child accounts
- Realm is offline: Realms can be manually paused or closed by the owner; if it doesn't appear, the owner may need to check their subscription status
- Whitelist is full: Bedrock Realms have a player slot limit; if the owner's list is full, they'll need to remove someone before adding you
Java vs. Bedrock: What Changes the Experience
Beyond the join process itself, the two versions behave differently in ways that affect how Realms work day-to-day:
Java Edition Realms support a feature called Realm Worlds, where the owner can upload and swap between multiple world saves. They also support some minigame templates. However, Java Realms do not support mods — only vanilla gameplay and datapacks.
Bedrock Edition Realms support cross-platform play between Windows, Xbox, mobile, and Switch players simultaneously. Bedrock Realms also allow the owner to add Marketplace content (paid add-ons and resource packs) to the Realm, which all invited players can access while connected.
What You Actually Need Before You Can Join
Before expecting to join a Realm successfully, it's worth confirming a few things on your end:
- ✅ You own a paid copy of Minecraft on the correct edition
- ✅ Your game is updated to the latest release version
- ✅ Your Microsoft account is properly linked (required for both editions now)
- ✅ On consoles or Switch, your platform online subscription is active
- ✅ Your account's multiplayer settings are not restricted (check Microsoft Family Safety if using a child account)
The Realm owner controls the invitation and whitelist — there's nothing on your end that can substitute for that. But whether the join process goes smoothly once you're invited comes down almost entirely to your own platform setup, account configuration, and which version of the game you're running.
