How to Change Your FedEx Delivery Address Guide

Understanding FedEx Address Change Options

FedEx offers several ways to change your delivery address, and the method you use depends on your situation and how much notice you can provide. Whether you need to redirect a package that's already in transit, change where a future delivery should go, or update your address for recurring shipments, FedEx has different processes for each scenario. Understanding these options helps you choose the fastest and most appropriate method for your needs.

The most common reason people change delivery addresses is because they've moved to a new location and need packages sent there instead. Another frequent reason involves packages being delivered while you're away from home, so you want them sent to an alternate location like your workplace or a family member's house. Some people use address changes to redirect packages to FedEx facilities for pickup rather than home delivery.

FedEx processes address changes differently depending on whether the package has already been picked up by a driver, is scheduled for delivery today, or is still several days away. Packages that haven't yet been picked up from the sender's location offer the most flexibility for changes. Once a package is in FedEx's delivery network and approaching your address, options become more limited. Understanding these timing factors helps you know which method will actually work for your situation.

The company allows address changes through their website, mobile app, phone, and in some cases through their retail locations. Each method has different availability windows and response times. Some methods work in real-time while others require FedEx staff to process your request during business hours. Having information about all available methods means you can choose based on when you need the change made and what level of convenience matters to you.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting an address change, determine when your package will be picked up or delivered, as this timing directly affects which methods will work and how quickly FedEx can process your request.

Using the FedEx Website and Mobile App for Address Changes

The FedEx website and mobile app provide the most convenient way to change delivery addresses because you can do it from anywhere at any time. Both platforms offer similar functionality, though some people find the mobile app easier to use on phones and tablets while others prefer the website on computers. To use either method, you'll need to locate your tracking number, which appears on shipping confirmations, receipts, or labels.

To change an address through the website, start by going to fedex.com and finding the tracking section. Enter your tracking number in the search field. Once your package information loads, look for an option that says something like "Change Delivery" or "Manage Delivery." This option typically appears only if your package hasn't been delivered and the timing allows for changes. The website will show you what address changes are possible for your specific package.

The FedEx mobile app works similarly to the website. Download the app from your phone's app store, then use the tracking feature to find your package. The app may send you notifications when your package is out for delivery, and you can often use these notifications to access the address change options directly. Some users find the app helpful because notifications alert them to windows when address changes are still possible.

When you request an address change through the website or app, FedEx processes it in their system, and the driver receives an update. However, if you're requesting this change very close to when the driver is supposed to arrive, there's a chance the change won't reach the driver in time. For this reason, the earlier you make the change, the more likely it will be completed successfully. FedEx typically allows address changes up to a certain point in the delivery day, often until the package is marked as out for delivery.

The website and app also let you choose alternative delivery options beyond just changing the address. For example, you can request that a package be held at a FedEx location for pickup instead of being delivered to your home. You can also request that the driver leave the package in a specific location like your porch or side door, though this is different from changing the delivery address itself.

Practical Takeaway: Use the FedEx website or mobile app as your first option because it's available 24/7 and often processes changes within minutes, but do this as soon as possible rather than waiting until delivery day.

Changing Your Address by Phone or Through FedEx Locations

If you prefer speaking with someone directly or if the website and app options aren't working for your situation, you can call FedEx customer service to request an address change. FedEx's phone line is available during business hours, typically from early morning until evening. You'll need your tracking number ready when you call. The representative will look up your package, explain what address changes are possible given how far along your package is in the delivery process, and make the change for you.

When you call FedEx, the representative can sometimes process changes that might not appear as available options online. They have access to more detailed package information and more flexibility in some situations. If your package is already out for delivery, a phone representative may be able to contact the driver directly to attempt the address change. However, success depends on timing and the driver's ability to communicate with the package location.

You can also visit a FedEx retail location in person to request address changes. These locations, often found in or near shipping stores, pharmacies, or other retail spaces, have computers that can access your tracking information. Staff members can help you change your address and may be able to provide additional options based on your specific situation. Some people find this method helpful because they can hand over their package in person if they're requesting a redirect to a different address.

The phone number for FedEx customer service appears on their website and on shipping labels. When you call, have your tracking number, original delivery address, and desired new address ready. The conversation typically takes 5 to 10 minutes. Representatives can explain whether your change will definitely go through or if there's uncertainty given the timing of your delivery.

One advantage of calling or visiting in person is that you can ask specific questions about your situation. For example, if you're shipping to a previous address and need it redirected to your new address, a representative can advise you on the best approach. They can also explain fees if address changes result in additional charges, though basic address changes typically don't cost extra.

Practical Takeaway: Use phone or in-person options when you need clarification about whether a change is possible or if the online methods aren't clearly showing your address change option.

Understanding When Address Changes Are and Aren't Possible

FedEx doesn't allow address changes in every situation, and understanding these limitations helps you set realistic expectations. The main factor determining whether you can change an address is where your package currently is in FedEx's delivery process. Packages that haven't yet been picked up from the sender have the most flexibility. Packages that are at a sorting facility waiting to be loaded on a delivery truck still typically allow changes. Packages that are already on a delivery truck heading to your neighborhood are in a gray area where changes might be possible but aren't guaranteed.

Once a package has been delivered, you cannot change its address through FedEx's systems. If it was delivered to the wrong address, you'll need to take a different approach, such as checking with neighbors or filing a claim. Similarly, if a package was delivered to your home while you were away and you didn't realize it until the next day, you can't use the address change feature. Instead, you might need to contact the sender about reshipping it to you.

The type of service used for shipping also affects address change options. FedEx Ground packages may have different change windows than FedEx Express packages. Overnight and priority services typically allow changes up until earlier in the delivery day because these packages move through the system more quickly. Ground packages, which take several days, often allow changes for longer periods. The FedEx website or a customer service representative can tell you what's possible for your specific service type and package status.

International packages have additional restrictions on address changes. If your package is crossing borders, address changes may not be possible once it's left the originating country. Some international shipments require customs clearance at your original delivery address and can't be redirected to another location. Understanding these restrictions is important if you're expecting an international delivery and need to change where it goes.

Address changes also aren't possible if you're requesting delivery to an address that FedEx doesn't service. FedEx has coverage maps showing where they deliver. If you're asking for a package to be sent to a rural area, P.O. box, or other location outside their normal service area, they'll let you know that isn't possible. In those cases, you
