Learn How to Update Your Facebook Account Email

Understanding Why You Might Need to Update Your Email Address

Your Facebook email address serves as one of the most important pieces of information connected to your account. This email acts as a recovery method if you forget your password, receive important notifications from Facebook, and serves as a way for other people to contact you through the platform. According to Facebook's own documentation, maintaining an up-to-date email address is one of the primary ways to keep your account secure and accessible.

There are several common reasons why someone might need to change their Facebook email. Perhaps you created your account years ago using an old email address that you no longer check regularly. Maybe you switched jobs and your work email is no longer active. Some people change their email when they upgrade to a new email provider or consolidate multiple email accounts into one main address. Others may have security concerns about an old email account and want to use a newer, more secure one instead.

If you cannot access your old email address anymore, updating to a new one becomes even more critical. Without a working email on file, you might have difficulty recovering your account if you're ever locked out. Facebook uses email addresses to verify your identity during account recovery, so having a current email that you can check is essential for maintaining control of your account.

Understanding the importance of this step helps you see why it's worth taking a few minutes to complete. The process itself is straightforward and can typically be done in just a couple of minutes from any device that connects to the internet.

Practical Takeaway: Check your current Facebook email address today by visiting your settings to see if it matches an email you actually use. If it doesn't, plan to update it as soon as possible to ensure you don't lose access to your account.

Locating Your Current Email Address in Facebook Settings

Before you can update your email, you need to know where to find your current email address in Facebook's settings. The process differs slightly depending on whether you're using Facebook on a computer or a mobile device, but the general location is consistent across all platforms.

If you're using Facebook on a computer, start by logging into your account. In the top right corner of any Facebook page, you'll see a downward-pointing arrow or your profile picture. Click this button to open a dropdown menu. From this menu, look for an option that says "Settings and Privacy" or simply "Settings." Click on "Settings." This takes you to a page that shows various settings categories on the left side of the screen. Look for an option labeled "Personal Information" or "Account." Click on this section.

Within your Personal Information section, you should see a field labeled "Email" or "Email Address." This field displays the email currently associated with your Facebook account. There may be additional emails listed below this if you've added backup email addresses over the years. Backup emails are secondary addresses you can use to log in or receive account notifications, separate from your primary email.

On a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet, the process is similar but uses Facebook's mobile interface. Open the Facebook app and tap the menu icon, which typically appears as three horizontal lines in the bottom right corner (on Android) or top right corner (on iPhone). Scroll down and tap "Settings and Privacy," then tap "Settings." From there, look for "Personal Information" and tap on it. You'll see your email address listed there, just as it appears on the computer version.

Take a moment to write down or note your current email address. This helps you keep track of what you're changing from and ensures you don't accidentally add the wrong address.

Practical Takeaway: Spend two minutes right now to locate your current email in Facebook settings so you know exactly what you're working with before making any changes.

Step-by-Step Process for Updating Your Email on a Computer

Updating your email address on a computer is the most straightforward method since you have access to a full keyboard and larger screen. Follow these steps carefully to ensure you make the change correctly.

First, log into your Facebook account using the email address or phone number you currently have on file. Once you're logged in, click the downward arrow or your profile picture in the top right corner. Select "Settings and Privacy" followed by "Settings." In the left sidebar, click on "Personal Information." You'll now see a section with your email address displayed.

Next to your email address, you should see a pencil icon or an "Edit" button. Click this icon or button to enter edit mode for your email field. The email address will become editable, and you may notice that the current email address is highlighted or selected.

Delete the old email address completely. Depending on your browser and computer setup, you can do this by selecting all the text (using Ctrl+A on Windows or Command+A on Mac) and then pressing the Delete or Backspace key. Alternatively, you can triple-click the email field to select all the text and then type your new address.

Type in your new email address carefully. Make sure you don't have any extra spaces before or after the address, and double-check that you've spelled it correctly. Email addresses are case-insensitive, meaning it doesn't matter if you use capital letters or lowercase letters, but the spelling and punctuation must be exact.

After entering your new email address, look for a "Save" button or "Confirm" button near the email field. Click this button to save your change. Facebook will typically send a verification email to your new address. Check the inbox of your new email address and look for a message from Facebook. The message will ask you to confirm the change by clicking a link or entering a code. Complete this verification step to finalize the update.

Practical Takeaway: Go through each step slowly and verify your new email address is spelled correctly before saving, as errors here can cause future access problems.

Updating Your Email Using the Facebook Mobile App

Many people primarily access Facebook through their smartphones or tablets rather than computers. The Facebook mobile app includes all the same settings and options as the website version, though the layout is organized differently to fit a smaller screen.

Open the Facebook app on your mobile device and ensure you're logged in. At the bottom of your screen (on Android devices) or at the top right (on iPhone devices), you'll see a menu icon. This typically appears as three horizontal lines, sometimes called a "hamburger menu." Tap this icon to open the main menu. Scroll down through the menu options until you see "Settings and Privacy." Tap on this option, then tap on "Settings" from the submenu that appears.

Once in your main settings, look for "Personal Information" and tap on it. Your current email address will be displayed on the screen. To edit it, tap directly on the email address field or look for an edit icon next to it. The field will become active and allow you to make changes.

Select all the text in the email field and delete it. You can do this by tapping and holding on the email address, which usually brings up options to cut or select all the text. Once the field is empty, type your new email address using your phone's keyboard. Take your time and check for any typos before proceeding.

After entering your new email address, look for a "Save" or "Done" button. On most phones, this appears near the top or bottom of the screen, depending on your device's operating system. Tap this button to save your changes. Just like on the computer version, Facebook will send a verification email to the new address you provided. Open the email app on your mobile device, check your new email account, and look for the confirmation message from Facebook. Tap the verification link in that email to complete the process.

One advantage of using the mobile app is that you can make these changes from anywhere. However, some people find it easier to verify the email change by checking their new email account on the same device where they made the change, since they can switch between apps more easily.

Practical Takeaway: If you primarily use Facebook on your phone, try updating your email directly through the mobile app rather than switching to a computer, since the process is just as simple.

Verifying Your New Email Address and What to Do If You Don't Receive the Confirmation

After you save your new email address in Facebook settings, the platform sends a verification email to that address. This verification step is critical because it confirms that you actually own and have access to the email address you're trying to add to your account. Without completing this verification, Facebook may not fully activate the new email
