How to Delete Cards and Passes From Apple Wallet

Apple Wallet is a convenient hub for storing credit cards, debit cards, boarding passes, event tickets, loyalty cards, and transit cards — all in one place on your iPhone. But over time, it can fill up with expired passes, old payment methods, or cards you simply no longer use. Knowing how to remove items cleanly keeps your Wallet organized and your payment experience smooth.

What Lives in Apple Wallet

Before removing anything, it helps to understand the two main categories of items in Apple Wallet:

  • Payment cards — credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards added for use with Apple Pay
  • Passes and tickets — boarding passes, event tickets, loyalty cards, store cards, transit cards, and ID cards (where supported)

Each category is removed through a slightly different path, and the consequences of removal can vary depending on how the card or pass was originally added.

How to Delete a Credit or Debit Card From Apple Wallet

Removing a payment card from Apple Wallet also removes it from Apple Pay on that device. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone
  2. Tap the card you want to remove
  3. Tap the more button (three dots) in the upper-right corner
  4. Scroll down and tap Remove Card
  5. Confirm by tapping Remove when prompted

The card is removed from Apple Pay on that device immediately. If you have multiple Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID — such as an Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac — the card may still be active on those devices unless you remove it separately from each one.

Removing Cards Across Multiple Devices

Apple Wallet does not automatically sync removals across all devices. If you delete a card from your iPhone, it remains available on your Apple Watch until you remove it there as well. To remove a card from Apple Watch:

  • Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone
  • Go to My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay
  • Tap the card and select Remove

Alternatively, you can manage cards directly from Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay on each device.

Passes and tickets follow a similar removal process but with one important distinction — most passes are time-limited and may already be marked as expired.

  1. Open the Wallet app
  2. Tap the pass or ticket you want to delete
  3. Tap the more button (three dots) in the upper-right corner
  4. Tap Remove Pass (the label may vary — some passes show "Delete" instead)
  5. Confirm the removal

Expired passes are often hidden by default but still stored in Wallet. To find and remove them, scroll to the bottom of your Wallet and tap View Expired Passes, then remove them individually.

Removing Cards Remotely via iCloud

If you've lost your iPhone or it's been stolen, you can remove payment cards remotely without having the device in hand:

  • Sign in to iCloud.com from any browser
  • Go to Find My → your device
  • Select Erase Device — this suspends all Apple Pay cards on that device

You can also call the card issuer directly to suspend or remove the card from Apple Pay if you're concerned about unauthorized use.

What Happens to Your Card After Removal

Removing a card from Apple Wallet does not cancel the physical card or close the account. It simply removes the digital token that allows that card to be used through Apple Pay. Your card issuer retains the account, and you can re-add the card to Wallet at any time by following the standard setup process.

Variables That Affect Your Removal Process

Not every removal experience works the same way. Several factors shape what you'll see and what happens after:

  • iOS version — the exact menu labels and navigation steps have shifted across iOS versions; newer versions (iOS 16 and later) use the three-dot menu, while older versions may show a settings icon instead
  • Card type — some corporate or employer-issued cards added through managed profiles may require IT administrator action to remove
  • Transit cards — in some regions, transit cards carry a stored balance that could be lost if removed without transferring funds first; behavior varies by transit system and region
  • Passes added by apps — passes linked to a third-party app (like an airline app or a retailer's loyalty program) may reappear in Wallet if the app re-adds them automatically

When Removal Behaves Differently

Some users find that certain passes or cards resist removal or reappear after deletion. This typically happens when:

  • A linked app is configured to automatically add passes to Wallet
  • A Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile on a corporate device restricts Wallet modifications
  • The card was issued by a bank that has a direct integration with Apple Wallet and re-adds the card after a sync

In these cases, disabling automatic pass updates within the relevant app's settings — or contacting an IT administrator — is usually the necessary step before removal will stick. 📱

Whether you're doing routine cleanup, switching banks, or preparing to sell your device, the right removal path depends on what type of item you're dealing with, which devices you use, and whether any third-party apps or profiles have influence over your Wallet. Those specifics are what determine whether a simple tap-and-confirm is enough — or whether a few extra steps are needed.
