How to Update Your Payment Method on Amazon
Managing your payment information on Amazon is one of those tasks that sounds simple but has more layers than most people expect. Whether your card expired, you got a new bank account, or you just want to shift purchases to a different payment method, knowing exactly where to make those changes — and how they affect existing and future orders — saves a lot of frustration.
Where Amazon Stores Your Payment Information
Amazon separates payment information into two distinct areas: Your Account's Wallet and payment methods attached to specific subscriptions or orders.
Your Amazon Wallet (found under Account & Lists → Your Account → Manage Payment Methods) is the central hub. This is where you add, edit, or remove credit cards, debit cards, and other payment options like bank accounts or Amazon gift card balances.
However, updating a card in your Wallet does not automatically update that payment method on active subscriptions like Amazon Prime, Subscribe & Save, or Kindle Unlimited. Those pull from their own payment settings, managed separately.
This distinction catches a lot of people off guard.
How to Update a Payment Method in Your Amazon Wallet
On a Web Browser (Desktop or Mobile)
- Go to amazon.com and sign in
- Hover over Account & Lists, then click Your Account
- Select Payment options (sometimes labeled Manage payment methods)
- Find the card or payment method you want to update
- Click Edit to update the card number, expiration date, billing address, or cardholder name
- Click Add a payment method if you're adding something new
- To remove a method, click Remove — but note you can't remove a card actively tied to a pending order
On the Amazon Mobile App
- Tap the profile icon (bottom navigation bar)
- Tap Your Account
- Scroll to Manage payment methods
- Tap the card you want to edit or tap Add a payment method
The app experience is streamlined but occasionally has a slight delay syncing changes across devices. If you update a card on the app and don't see the change reflected immediately elsewhere, give it a few minutes.
Updating Payment for Amazon Prime Specifically 💳
Prime manages its billing independently. To change the card Amazon charges for your Prime membership:
- Go to Your Account → Prime → Manage Your Prime Membership
- Select Update payment method
- Choose an existing card from your Wallet or add a new one
If your Prime payment fails, Amazon typically retries the charge over several days before suspending benefits. You'll receive email notifications during this window, giving you time to update before losing access.
Updating Payment for Subscribe & Save or Other Recurring Orders
Each recurring delivery or subscription may carry its own stored payment method. To update these:
- Go to Your Account → Subscribe & Save
- Click on a specific subscription
- Look for the Payment method section and update accordingly
The same applies to digital subscriptions like Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Amazon Music, and Amazon Kids+. Each has its own billing settings, typically accessible through the corresponding membership management page.
What Happens to Orders Already Placed?
Pending orders (placed but not yet shipped) can have their payment method updated in most cases:
- Go to Your Orders
- Find the relevant order
- Click Change payment method (this option disappears once the order ships or enters fulfillment)
Once an order has shipped and been charged, the payment method is locked to that transaction. You cannot retroactively change how a completed purchase was billed.

Common Issues When Updating Payment Methods
"We couldn't process your payment" — Usually means the card details don't match what's on file with your bank, or the billing address entered doesn't match your bank's records. Double-check the ZIP code especially.
Card won't save — Some prepaid or virtual cards are rejected by Amazon's system. Not all prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift cards are accepted as saved payment methods.
Can't remove a card — A card tied to an active order, subscription, or as the sole payment method cannot be deleted until those associations are cleared or reassigned.
Changes not reflected at checkout — Browser cache can cause your Wallet page to show stale data. A hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R on most browsers) or clearing cookies usually resolves this.
The Part That Depends on Your Setup
How straightforward this process is — and whether a single change actually does what you expect — depends heavily on how your Amazon account is structured. Someone who primarily uses Amazon for one-off purchases has a very different situation than someone managing Prime, multiple Subscribe & Save orders, a household account with shared payment methods, or business billing through Amazon Business.
Each subscription, each recurring order, and each Amazon service maintains its own payment relationship. A change in one place doesn't cascade automatically to the others. Whether that's an inconvenience or a serious gap in your billing management depends entirely on how many of those layers exist in your own account.
