How to Convert an Image to Vector in Adobe Illustrator
Converting a raster image to a vector in Adobe Illustrator is one of the most practical skills in any designer's toolkit. Whether you're preparing a logo for large-format printing or cleaning up a scanned sketch, understanding how vectorization works — and what shapes the result — makes the difference between a clean output and a frustrating mess.
What "Converting to Vector" Actually Means
Raster images (JPEGs, PNGs, BMPs) are built from pixels — a fixed grid of colored squares. Scale them up and they blur. Vector graphics, by contrast, are defined by mathematical paths and anchor points, so they scale infinitely without any loss of quality.

Using the Pen Tool
Place the image on a locked layer, create a new layer above it, and use the Pen Tool (P) to draw paths over the shapes manually. This gives you:
- Complete control over anchor point placement
- Clean, intentional curves using Bézier handles
- Far fewer nodes than any automated trace

- Whether the final output needs to be editable or just scalable
