How to Merge Shapes in PowerPoint (And What Each Option Actually Does)

PowerPoint's Merge Shapes feature is one of those tools that looks simple on the surface but opens up a surprising range of creative possibilities once you understand how it works. Whether you're designing custom icons, cutting text into shapes, or building infographics from scratch, merging shapes gives you control that basic shape formatting simply can't match.

What "Merging Shapes" Actually Means in PowerPoint

When you merge shapes in PowerPoint, you're combining two or more shapes into a single object using geometric logic. This isn't the same as grouping — grouping keeps shapes as separate objects that move together, while merging permanently alters the geometry to create something new.

PowerPoint offers five distinct merge operations, each producing a different result. Understanding what each one does before you click is the difference between getting exactly what you want and undoing your way back to the start.

Fragment is the most useful for precision design work where you need control over each zone.

Intersect

Keeps only the area where shapes overlap and discards everything else. If you select a star and a circle that partially overlap, the result is only the shared region. This is particularly useful for cropping shapes to a specific boundary.

Subtract

Removes the overlapping portion of the second shape from the first. The first shape you selected is the base — the second shape acts as a "cookie cutter."
