How to Clear Your History on YouTube: Watch History, Search History, and More
YouTube quietly builds a detailed record of everything you watch and search for. That history shapes your recommendations, auto-fills your search bar, and sticks around longer than most people realize. Whether you're tidying up your privacy, fixing broken recommendations, or just cleaning house, knowing exactly what gets stored — and how to remove it — makes a real difference.
What YouTube Actually Stores About You
Before clearing anything, it helps to know what you're dealing with. YouTube tracks two distinct histories:
- Watch history — every video you've played while signed in
- Search history — every query you've typed into the YouTube search bar
These are stored in your Google Account, not just locally on your device. That means clearing history on your phone doesn't automatically clear it on your laptop, and vice versa — unless you go through Google's account settings directly.
There's also YouTube's recommendation algorithm, which is influenced by your history but isn't the same thing as your history. Clearing your history resets the data input; it doesn't instantly reset your recommendations, though they'll shift noticeably over time.
How to Clear YouTube Watch History
On Desktop (youtube.com)
- Sign in and click your profile icon in the top-right corner
- Go to Settings → History & privacy
- Select Clear watch history
- Confirm the deletion
Alternatively, go directly to myactivity.google.com, filter by YouTube, and delete entries individually or in bulk. This route gives you more granular control — you can remove specific videos rather than wiping everything.
On Mobile (iOS and Android)
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile icon
- Tap Settings → History & privacy
- Tap Clear watch history
The mobile path mirrors the desktop one, but the interface varies slightly depending on your app version and OS. Some users find the option nested under a "Manage all history" link, which routes to Google's activity dashboard in a browser.
How to Clear YouTube Search History
Search history is stored separately from watch history and needs to be cleared independently.
On Desktop
- Go to Settings → History & privacy
- Select Clear search history
Or visit myactivity.google.com, filter to YouTube searches, and delete from there.
On Mobile
- Profile icon → Settings → History & privacy
- Tap Clear search history
You can also remove individual search suggestions: tap the search bar, long-press a specific suggestion, and select Remove from search history. Useful if you want to tidy specific entries without nuking everything.
Pausing History Instead of Deleting It 🔒
If you'd rather stop YouTube from recording history going forward without clearing what's already there, you can pause both watch and search history separately:
- Pause watch history — new videos won't be added, but existing history remains
- Pause search history — searches won't be saved, but old entries stay put

Google offers an auto-delete option that purges your YouTube history on a rolling schedule. Options include:
