How to Clear Your YouTube Watch History (And Why It Matters)
YouTube remembers everything you watch — that's by design. Its recommendation algorithm feeds on your viewing history to serve up content it thinks you'll enjoy. But that same history can become cluttered, skewed, or simply too personal to leave sitting around. Whether you're troubleshooting weird recommendations, sharing a device, or just doing a digital reset, clearing your YouTube video history is straightforward — once you know where to look.
What YouTube Actually Tracks
Before diving into steps, it helps to understand what you're clearing. YouTube maintains two distinct records:
- Watch history — every video you've played while signed in
- Search history — every query you've typed into the YouTube search bar
These are separate. Clearing your watch history doesn't automatically clear your search history, and vice versa. Both live inside My Activity, which is Google's unified activity dashboard — not just within the YouTube app itself.
This distinction matters because many people clear one and assume both are gone.
How to Clear YouTube Watch History on Different Platforms

- Go to youtube.com and sign in
- Click your profile icon (top right)
- Select Your data in YouTube
- Under "YouTube Watch History," click Manage your YouTube Watch History
- This opens Google's My Activity dashboard
- Click Delete and choose your timeframe: last hour, last day, custom range, or All time
- Confirm the deletion
Alternatively, you can go directly to myactivity.google.com, filter by YouTube, and delete from there.

- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture
- Go to Settings → History & privacy
- Tap Clear watch history
- Confirm when prompted
The same menu also includes Clear search history — again, these are separate actions.
📺 On Smart TVs and Streaming Devices
The YouTube app on smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, etc.) typically has a slimmer settings menu. The most reliable method on these devices is to:
- Navigate to Settings within the YouTube app
- Look for History or Privacy options (available on most platforms)
- Or handle it from a browser or phone using the same Google account — changes sync across all signed-in devices
If you can't find history settings in the TV app, clearing it via desktop or mobile is your best fallback since it operates at the account level.
Pausing History Instead of Deleting It

- The "Previously watched" badge disappears — videos you've already seen won't show that indicator anymore
- Watch progress is lost — if you were mid-way through a long video, that progress marker won't survive a history clear
- Changes are account-wide — because this is tied to your Google account, not the device, clearing on one device clears everywhere you're signed in
When You're Not Signed In
If you watch YouTube without a Google account, history is stored locally on the device — in the app's local cache or browser session. In this case:
- On a browser, clearing cookies and site data for YouTube.com removes it
- On the mobile app, clearing the app's cache through your phone's settings does the job
- There's no account-level history to manage since nothing is synced
