How to Undo Motion Blur in Photopea: What Actually Works
Motion blur is one of those effects that looks intentional when you add it — and deeply frustrating when you're trying to remove it. Whether you're working with a photo that came out blurry from camera shake, or you applied a blur filter in Photopea and want to reverse it, the path forward depends heavily on what kind of blur you're dealing with and at what stage you're catching it.
What Motion Blur Actually Is (and Why It Matters for Removal)
Motion blur occurs when a subject or camera moves during exposure, smearing pixel data across a directional path. In Photopea — the free, browser-based Photoshop alternative — motion blur can appear in two contexts:
- Applied blur — you used Filter > Blur > Motion Blur intentionally (or accidentally) within Photopea itself
- Captured blur — the source photo already had motion blur baked in before you imported it
These two situations have very different solutions. Mixing them up is the most common reason people feel stuck.
Undoing Motion Blur You Applied Inside Photopea
If you added motion blur using Photopea's filter tools, your options depend on how recently it happened and how you set up your file.
The Undo History (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z)
The simplest answer: Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Cmd+Z (Mac) steps backward through your edit history. Photopea supports multiple undo steps, so if the blur was applied recently in your session, you can keep pressing Undo until the effect disappears.
You can also go to Edit > Step Backward for more granular control.
⚠️ The catch: once you close Photopea or the session resets, your undo history is gone. Photopea is browser-based, which means it doesn't persist history across sessions the way a locally installed app might.
Smart Objects and Non-Destructive Editing
If you're working on a Smart Object layer, filters applied to it are non-destructive by default. You can go to the Layers panel, find the filter listed beneath your Smart Object, and simply delete or disable it — no undo history required.
This is why working with Smart Objects is considered a best practice in Photopea when you're experimenting with effects. Converting a regular layer to a Smart Object before applying blur gives you the flexibility to remove or adjust it at any point.
If your layer is not a Smart Object and you've already saved and closed the file, the blur is baked in. That changes what's possible.
Reducing Motion Blur Baked Into a Photo
When blur is already embedded in your image — either from a closed session or from the original photo — you're no longer undoing an action. You're attempting blur correction, which is a fundamentally different process.
Photopea doesn't include a dedicated deconvolution or "shake reduction" tool like Photoshop's dedicated Shake Reduction filter. However, there are techniques that can reduce the visible impact.
Sharpen Filters
Go to Filter > Sharpen and you'll find a few options:

A more controlled technique: duplicate your layer, go to Filter > Other > High Pass, set a low radius, then set that layer's blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light. This recovers edge detail without oversharpening flat areas.
The Limits of Software Correction ��
It's worth being direct here: no software tool — in Photopea or anywhere else — fully reconstructs motion-blurred pixel data. Sharpening filters enhance edges that still exist in the image, but they can't recover detail that was genuinely lost during the blur. The more severe the motion blur, the less recoverable the image.
Factors that affect how well correction works:
- Blur length and direction — short, directional blur is more correctable than long or rotational blur
- Image resolution — higher-resolution files retain more recoverable detail
- Noise levels — heavy noise combined with blur makes correction significantly harder

Using External AI Tools Before Importing to Photopea
Some users have success running blurry photos through AI-based sharpening tools — such as Topaz Sharpen AI, Adobe Firefly, or free web-based options — before opening them in Photopea. These tools use machine learning models trained on millions of images to estimate what lost detail should look like.
This is a separate workflow from anything Photopea handles natively, but it's worth knowing the option exists if the in-app results aren't sufficient for your use case.

The right approach to undoing or reducing motion blur in Photopea comes down to a few specific things about your situation:
- When the blur was applied — during your current session, a previous session, or pre-existing in the photo
- Whether you used Smart Objects — which determines if the filter is still editable
