How to Leave a Facebook Group (On Any Device)

Leaving a Facebook group is straightforward once you know where to look — but the exact steps differ depending on whether you're on a phone, tablet, or desktop. There are also a few things worth understanding before you leave, because the outcome isn't always identical depending on your role in the group.

Why You Might Want to Leave a Facebook Group

Facebook groups can pile up fast. You joined a local buy/sell page two years ago, a hobbyist community that went quiet, or a group that's turned into a notification flood. Whatever the reason, leaving removes the group from your feed and stops notifications — but it also removes your access to any posts, files, or discussions shared inside it.

If you're just tired of the noise, muting or pausing notifications is a softer option. But if you want a clean break, leaving is the right move.

How to Leave a Facebook Group on Mobile (iOS and Android)

The Facebook mobile app uses the same general flow on both iOS and Android, though button placement can shift slightly with app updates.

Steps:

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines, usually bottom-right on iOS or top-right on Android)
  2. Tap Groups, then find and open the group you want to leave
  3. Tap the shield icon or the group name at the top to open group settings
  4. Scroll down and tap Leave Group
  5. You'll be asked to confirm — tap Leave Group again

Facebook may also ask whether you want to prevent other members from re-adding you. If the group has been adding you back without your consent, tick that option before confirming.

How to Leave a Facebook Group on Desktop

On the desktop version of Facebook (web browser), the process is slightly different:

Steps:

  1. Go to facebook.com and log in
  2. In the left sidebar, click Groups, then select Your Groups or find the group under Groups You've Joined
  3. Open the group
  4. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) near the top of the group page — usually next to the "Joined" or "Member" button
  5. Select Leave Group
  6. Confirm by clicking Leave Group in the pop-up

The same re-add prevention option appears here as well.

What Happens After You Leave 👋

Once you leave:

  • The group disappears from your Groups list
  • You lose access to all posts, photos, and files shared within the group (unless the group is public and viewable without membership)
  • Other members are not notified that you left
  • Your past comments and posts remain in the group unless you deleted them before leaving

That last point surprises people. Facebook does not automatically remove your historical contributions when you exit. If you posted something you'd prefer removed, delete it before leaving.

If You're the Group Admin

This is where things get more complicated. You cannot leave a group you administrate without first either:

  • Transferring admin role to another member, or
  • Deleting the group entirely

To transfer admin: go to the member list, find the person you want to promote, click the three dots next to their name, and select Make Admin. Once they've accepted, you can leave without the group being deleted.

If you're the sole admin and want to close the group entirely, you'll need to delete it — which is a permanent action that removes all content and membership for everyone.

Leaving vs. Muting vs. Unfollowing: What's the Difference?

These three options serve very different purposes:

ActionStops NotificationsRemoves from FeedKeeps AccessReversible
Mute Group
Unfollow Group
Leave GroupRequires re-joining

Unfollowing a group lets you stay a member (useful if membership grants access to resources or events) while keeping group posts out of your News Feed. Muting goes further by silencing notifications but still surfaces posts. Leaving is the full exit.

Can You Rejoin After Leaving?

Yes — for most groups. If the group is public or open, you can search for it and rejoin. If it's a private group, you'll need to request to join again and wait for admin approval. If you previously selected the "don't allow re-adding" option, members won't be able to add you back directly, but you can still request to join yourself.

A Note on Group Privacy Settings 🔒

Public groups — anyone can see posts whether they're a member or not. Leaving has minimal impact on your access to public content.

Private groups — posts are only visible to members. Once you leave, the content goes dark unless you rejoin.

Hidden groups — these don't appear in search at all. If you leave a hidden group, you may not be able to find it again to request re-entry unless someone sends you a direct link or invite.

Your role in the group, the group's privacy setting, and whether you're on mobile or desktop all shape what the leaving process looks like — and what you'll lose or retain when it's done.
