How to Delete Activity History on Facebook
Facebook keeps a detailed record of nearly everything you do on the platform — the posts you like, the searches you run, the ads you click, the pages you visit. That data lives in a feature called Activity Log, and Facebook also tracks off-platform behavior through its Off-Facebook Activity tool. Knowing the difference between these two systems is the first step to actually clearing your history.
What Facebook Actually Tracks
Before diving into the steps, it helps to understand what "activity history" means on Facebook, because it covers more than most people expect:
- Activity Log — a private, chronological record of everything you've done on Facebook: posts, comments, reactions, searches, tags, check-ins, and more
- Off-Facebook Activity — data collected by third-party apps and websites that use Facebook's tracking tools (like the Meta Pixel), then sent back to Facebook and linked to your account
- Search history — your on-platform search queries, stored separately within the Activity Log
- Marketplace and ad interactions — browsing and click activity tied to Facebook's advertising system
Each of these has its own deletion path. There is no single "delete everything" button that wipes all of them at once.
How to Clear Your Facebook Activity Log 🗂️
The Activity Log is accessible from your profile on both desktop and mobile, but the navigation varies slightly by platform.
On desktop:
- Go to your Facebook profile
- Click the three-dot menu (⋯) below your cover photo
- Select Activity Log
- Use the filters on the left to browse by category (posts, comments, reactions, searches, etc.)
- Click the three-dot icon next to any individual item to delete, hide, or unlike/unreact
On mobile (iOS or Android):
- Tap your profile picture to go to your profile
- Tap the three-dot menu
- Select Activity Log
- Browse or filter by category
- Tap the item and select your action
Facebook does not currently offer a single tap to bulk-delete your entire Activity Log across all categories. You can bulk-delete within some categories — like searches — but others require item-by-item removal.
Clearing Your Facebook Search History Specifically
Search history is one of the easier things to clear in bulk:
- Open your Activity Log
- Filter to Search History
- Tap or click Clear Searches
This removes your visible search history from the log. It does not mean Facebook deletes all underlying data associated with those searches from its servers.
How to Manage Off-Facebook Activity
Off-Facebook Activity is a separate and often overlooked layer. This is where Facebook stores data from websites and apps that use Facebook login, tracking pixels, or the Conversions API — so even when you're not on Facebook, activity may be getting logged.
To access this:
- Go to Settings & Privacy → Settings
- Select Your Facebook Information
- Tap or click Off-Facebook Activity
From here you can:
- View your history — see which companies have sent data about you
- Clear history — disconnects that activity from your account (the data isn't necessarily deleted from Facebook's servers, but it's no longer associated with your profile for ad targeting)
- Manage Future Activity — toggle off future off-Facebook data being linked to your account
The distinction matters: clearing off-Facebook activity disconnects it from your account identity, but Facebook's data infrastructure may still retain aggregated or anonymized signals. This is a meaningful privacy step, but not a complete data erasure.
The Variables That Affect What You Can Delete 🔍
Not all activity history can be removed the same way, and your ability to fully clear things depends on a few key factors:

What Deletion Actually Does (and Doesn't Do)
This is where expectations need calibration. When you delete or clear items from your Activity Log:
- The items are removed from your view of your own history
- The data may no longer influence your ad targeting (particularly for off-Facebook activity)
- Facebook may still retain the data internally under its Data Policy for legal, safety, or operational reasons
If your goal is full data deletion — not just clearing the visible log — that requires submitting a Download Your Information request first to see what Facebook holds, followed by using the Delete Account option or filing a data deletion request, depending on your region and applicable privacy laws (such as GDPR or CCPA).
Different Users, Different Priorities
A casual user who just wants a cleaner profile experience may only need to clear search history and hide old posts. Someone concerned about ad targeting will focus on the Off-Facebook Activity controls. A user with privacy or data concerns under applicable regulations has different tools available entirely — including formal data access and deletion rights.
Which layer of activity matters most, and how far the cleanup needs to go, depends entirely on what's driving the question in the first place.
