How to Delete Your Entire History on Facebook
Facebook has been collecting data about your activity for years — every search, every page you've visited, every ad you've clicked. If you've decided it's time to clean house, you have a few different options depending on what kind of "history" you're actually trying to delete. The catch is that Facebook uses the word loosely, and what's visible to you isn't always the same as what Facebook retains.
Here's a clear breakdown of what you can actually delete, how to do it, and what still sticks around afterward.
What "History" Actually Means on Facebook
Before you start deleting, it helps to know that Facebook stores several distinct types of activity data — and each one lives in a different place.
- Search history — every term you've typed into the Facebook search bar
- Activity log — a record of your likes, comments, posts, reactions, and shares
- Off-Facebook activity — data collected by third-party apps and websites that share your behavior back to Facebook
- Location history — if you've allowed location tracking through the app
- Browsing history within the app — pages and links you've opened inside Facebook's in-app browser
These are managed separately. There is no single "delete everything" button that wipes all of them at once.
How to Clear Your Facebook Search History
Your search history is one of the easiest things to remove entirely.
On mobile (iOS or Android):
- Tap the search icon at the top of your feed
- Tap Edit next to "Recent searches"
- Tap Clear searches to remove everything at once
On desktop:
- Click the search bar at the top
- Click Edit next to recent searches
- Select Clear All Recent Searches
This removes what's visible in your search bar. It does not permanently delete that data from Facebook's servers — it just removes it from your visible history and from what's used to populate suggestions.
How to Use Your Activity Log
Your Activity Log is the most comprehensive record of your on-platform actions. It lists posts you've made, things you've liked, comments you've left, and more — going back to the beginning of your account.
To access it:
- Desktop: Click your profile picture > tap the three dots near your cover photo > select Activity Log
- Mobile: Go to your profile > tap the three horizontal dots > select Activity Log
From here you can filter by category — posts, likes, comments, reactions — and delete or hide individual items. Unfortunately, bulk deletion is limited. Facebook does allow you to filter by year and delete groups of posts, but the interface has historically made mass deletion slow and inconsistent.
Third-party tools and browser extensions have been built to automate bulk deletion of Facebook activity logs, but their reliability and safety vary significantly. Facebook's own API restrictions have made many of these tools less effective over time.
How to Clear Off-Facebook Activity 🔒
This is arguably the most important — and most overlooked — part of your Facebook history.
Off-Facebook Activity is data that external websites and apps send to Facebook about your behavior outside the platform. Every time you visit a site with a Facebook Pixel embedded (which is most commercial websites), Facebook gets a record of it.

- Select Off-Facebook Activity

- You can also select Manage Future Activity to stop new data from being linked going forward
Clearing this does two things: it disconnects past activity from your profile and prevents it from being used to target ads. However, Facebook notes that this data may still be received and stored anonymously — it just won't be tied to your account identity.
Deleting Location History
If you've enabled location services for the Facebook app, your location history can be reviewed and deleted separately.
On mobile:
- Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Location
- Tap Location History to view the log
- Select Delete All Location History to clear it
Turning off location access entirely through your phone's app permissions settings (iOS Settings > Facebook > Location, or Android Settings > Apps > Facebook > Permissions) prevents future collection.
What You Cannot Actually Delete
This is where the gap between "deleted from your view" and "deleted from Facebook's systems" becomes important.
Facebook's Data Policy states that even after you remove content or history, copies may remain in backup systems for a period of time. Some data — particularly around account activity used for safety, security, and legal compliance — may not be fully erasable on demand.
Additionally, if your activity has been seen or interacted with by others — a comment someone liked, a post someone shared — that data exists in other people's records and cannot be fully retracted from Facebook's perspective.
