How to Delete Your Watch History and Search History on YouTube

YouTube keeps a running record of everything you watch and search for. That's useful when you want to pick up where you left off — but it also means your recommendations can get cluttered, your privacy can feel compromised, and other people using your device can see exactly what you've been watching. Clearing that history is straightforward, but the steps differ depending on your device, whether you're signed in, and which type of history you want to remove.

The Two Types of YouTube History

Before diving into steps, it's worth knowing that YouTube tracks two separate histories:

  • Watch history — every video you've played while signed in
  • Search history — every search query you've typed into YouTube's search bar

These are stored independently and need to be cleared separately if you want both gone. Many people clear one and assume the other is handled — it isn't.

If you're signed into a Google account, both histories are stored in your account on Google's servers, not just on your device. That means clearing the app cache alone won't remove them. You need to delete them through YouTube directly or through your Google account settings.

How to Delete YouTube History on a Phone or Tablet 📱

On the YouTube App (iOS and Android)

  1. Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture in the top right corner.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap History & privacy.
  4. You'll see options for Clear watch history and Clear search history — tap whichever you need (or both).
  5. Confirm when prompted.

This removes the history tied to your signed-in Google account. It applies across all devices where you use that account, not just the one in your hand.

Deleting Individual Videos from Watch History

You don't have to wipe everything at once. In the YouTube app:

  1. Tap your profile picture → Your data in YouTube (on some versions this appears in account settings directly).
  2. Or go to the Library tab → History.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu next to any video and select Remove from watch history.

This lets you surgically remove specific videos rather than starting from scratch.

How to Delete YouTube History on a Computer 🖥️

Through the YouTube Website

  1. Go to youtube.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile pictureYour data in YouTube.
  3. You'll see panels for YouTube Watch History and YouTube Search History.
  4. Click Manage your YouTube Watch History (this opens Google's My Activity dashboard).
  5. From there you can delete by date range, delete all history, or remove individual items.

The My Activity page (myactivity.google.com) is where Google centralizes activity data across its products, including YouTube. This is the most powerful interface for managing history — it lets you filter by date, keyword, or product and delete with precision.

Deleting History Directly from the Watch History Page

  1. On YouTube.com, click the hamburger menu (three lines, top left).
  2. Select History.
  3. Use the search bar in the History panel to find specific videos, or click Clear all watch history on the right side.
  4. To remove search history, switch to the Search history tab in the same panel.

Pausing History Instead of Deleting It

If you want YouTube to stop recording new history rather than just clearing what's already there, both options are available:

SettingWhat It Does
Pause Watch HistoryYouTube stops saving new videos you watch
Pause Search HistoryYouTube stops saving new searches

You'll find these options in the same menus mentioned above — right next to the clear/delete buttons. Pausing history also affects YouTube's recommendation algorithm, since it can no longer use your viewing habits to personalize suggestions.

What Happens When You're Not Signed In

If you watch YouTube without signing into a Google account, your watch and search history is stored locally on your device — in your browser's cookies and cache — rather than in your Google account. To clear it in that case, you'd clear your browser's browsing history and cookies, not YouTube's settings.

This distinction matters: signed-in history and browser-based history are in different places and require different actions.

Shared Devices and Multiple Accounts

If multiple people use the same device and share a Google account, deleting history removes it for everyone using that account. If each person has their own Google account, their histories are completely separate and unaffected by what others do.

YouTube also supports Incognito mode in the mobile app (tap your profile picture to find it). In Incognito, nothing is saved to your watch or search history for the duration of that session — useful when you want to browse without leaving a trace going forward.

The Variables That Affect Your Experience

How history deletion works in practice depends on several factors:

  • Whether you're signed in or not — determines where history lives (Google account vs. local browser storage)
  • Which device you're using — menu locations differ slightly between iOS, Android, and desktop browsers
  • Which YouTube app version you have — Google occasionally updates navigation, so exact menu names can shift
  • Whether you use multiple Google accounts — history is account-specific, so switching accounts shows different histories
  • Whether history is paused — if you previously paused history recording, there may be less to clear than you expect

Someone who watches YouTube exclusively on a smart TV signed into a family Google account has a meaningfully different situation than someone using a personal phone with a private account. The mechanics are the same, but where to look and what gets affected varies.
