How to Delete a Photo From Instagram (Any Device, Any Situation)

Deleting a photo from Instagram is straightforward once you know where to look — but the exact steps vary depending on your device, whether you're removing a single post or multiple posts, and whether the photo lives in a regular grid post, a Story, a Reel, or a collaborative post. Each scenario works a little differently, and understanding those differences saves you from hunting through menus.

What Actually Happens When You Delete an Instagram Photo

When you delete a post on Instagram, it's permanently removed from your profile grid, from the feeds of anyone who follows you, and from any direct shares via link. Instagram does not move deleted posts to a recovery folder by default — once it's gone, it's gone unless you've enabled the Recently Deleted feature (more on that below).

This is different from archiving, which hides a post from your public profile but keeps it saved privately in your account. If you're unsure whether you want a photo gone permanently, archiving is worth considering first.

If you're the original creator of a collaborative post, deleting it removes it for all collaborators simultaneously.
