How to Delete Recent History on Reddit: What You Can (and Can't) Clear
Reddit tracks quite a bit of activity as you browse — searches, profile visits, recently viewed posts. If you've ever opened your Reddit app and noticed a list of recent searches or recently viewed content staring back at you, you already know the feature exists. What's less obvious is how to remove it, and what "recent" actually means across different parts of the platform.
What Does "Recent" Mean on Reddit?
Reddit uses the word "recent" in a few different contexts, and they don't all work the same way:
- Recent searches — the search terms you've typed into Reddit's search bar
- Recently viewed posts — content you've tapped or clicked on, visible in some versions of the app
- Profile visit history — on desktop, Reddit sometimes shows recently visited profiles or subreddits in a sidebar
- Browser history — this lives outside Reddit entirely, in your browser or device
Each of these has its own clearing method, and not all of them can be deleted directly through Reddit's interface.
How to Clear Recent Searches on Reddit
This is the most commonly searched version of the question, and the good news is it's straightforward.
On the Reddit Mobile App (iOS and Android)
- Tap the search icon at the top of the screen
- Your recent searches appear as a list below the search bar
- You can tap the X next to any individual search term to remove it
- Some app versions show a "Clear" or "Clear all" option at the top of the recent searches list
The exact layout can differ slightly depending on whether you're on the official Reddit app, a third-party client like Apollo (now discontinued) or Relay, or an older version of the app. Reddit has redesigned its interface multiple times, so if your screen doesn't match this exactly, look for the X icon next to each search entry.
On Reddit Desktop (New Reddit)
- Click the search bar at the top of the page
- Recent searches appear in a dropdown
- Hover over a search term and click the X to remove individual entries
- There is currently no bulk "clear all" button on desktop — you remove them one at a time
On Old Reddit (old.reddit.com)
Old Reddit handles search history differently. It relies more heavily on your browser's autofill and history than Reddit's own stored data. Clearing recent searches here often means clearing browser history or disabling autofill in your browser settings rather than anything inside Reddit itself.

Clearing your browser history or app cache won't affect what Reddit has stored server-side, and vice versa. These are separate systems.
Does Reddit Store Your Activity on Its Servers?
Yes — when you're logged into a Reddit account, Reddit stores data about your activity as part of your account profile. This includes your posts, comments, votes, and some browsing behavior.
