How to Share a Link on Instagram Story

Instagram Stories are one of the most watched formats on the platform — and adding a clickable link to your Story can turn passive viewers into active visitors. Whether you're sharing a product page, a blog post, a YouTube video, or any other URL, the process has changed significantly over the years, and what's available to you depends on a few important factors.

The Link Sticker: Instagram's Current Method

Instagram removed the old "Swipe Up" link feature in 2021 and replaced it with the Link Sticker. This is now the standard way to add a clickable link to any Instagram Story — and unlike the original Swipe Up, it's available to all accounts, regardless of follower count or verification status.

Here's how it works:

  1. Open Instagram and tap the + icon or swipe right to open the camera
  2. Capture or upload your Story content (photo or video)
  3. Tap the Sticker icon (the square smiley face at the top of the screen)
  4. Select the Link sticker from the sticker tray
  5. Enter or paste the URL you want to share
  6. Optionally, customize the sticker text so it says something other than the raw URL
  7. Place and resize the sticker anywhere on your Story
  8. Tap Done, then share your Story as usual

Viewers who see your Story can tap the Link Sticker, and they'll be taken directly to that URL — either within Instagram's in-app browser or their default external browser, depending on their settings.

Customizing How the Link Sticker Looks

One underused feature is the ability to change the display text on the Link Sticker. Instead of showing a long, messy URL, you can type something like "Read the full article" or "Shop now" — making the sticker more visually clean and more likely to get tapped.

You can also:

  • Recolor the sticker by tapping it repeatedly after placing it — Instagram cycles through a few color options
  • Resize and reposition it by pinching or dragging
  • Layer it with other stickers or text to draw attention to it

The actual destination URL stays intact behind whatever display text you choose.

What Affects Whether Links Work the Way You Expect 🔗

Even though the Link Sticker is available to everyone, a few variables affect the experience:

Account type: The Link Sticker is available to personal, creator, and business accounts alike. However, some promotional or affiliate link types may be blocked by Instagram's spam filters — particularly shortened URLs from certain third-party services.

Link format: Instagram generally accepts standard URLs. However, certain URLs with complex query strings, tracking parameters, or unusual formatting can occasionally cause issues. If a link isn't working, testing a cleaner version of the same URL is worth trying.

Viewer device and settings: When a viewer taps your Link Sticker, Instagram typically opens the link in its built-in browser. Some users have their devices configured differently, and the experience can vary slightly between iOS and Android. On older versions of Instagram, link behavior differed — which is worth knowing if your audience includes users who don't update apps frequently.

Story visibility: Links are only tappable in Stories that are live or saved to Highlights. Once a Story expires after 24 hours, it's gone unless it's been added to a Highlight — and Highlight links remain active and tappable.

Adding Links to Story Highlights

If you save a Story with a Link Sticker to a Highlight, the link remains active for anyone who views that Highlight later. This is useful for evergreen content — a FAQ page, a product catalog, or a resource you want to stay accessible long-term.

To add a Story to a Highlight:

  • While the Story is live, tap Highlight at the bottom of the Story view
  • Or access it later from your archive via your profile settings

Keep in mind that the link in a Highlight is whatever URL was set when the Story was originally created — you can't edit it after the fact without deleting and recreating the Highlight Story.

Link Stickers vs. Other Ways to Share Links on Instagram

It's worth knowing where the Link Sticker fits compared to other Instagram link options:

MethodWhere It LivesClickable?Who Can Use It
Link StickerStories & Highlights✅ YesAll accounts
Bio linkProfile page✅ YesAll accounts
Link in post captionFeed posts❌ Not clickableAll accounts
Instagram ShoppingFeed & Stories✅ YesApproved sellers
Paid promotion linkAds✅ YesAdvertisers only

Feed post captions famously don't support clickable links — which is why many creators use phrases like "link in bio" and rely on a single bio URL or a link-aggregator service to route followers to multiple destinations.

The Variables That Shape Your Experience 📱

Whether the Link Sticker works smoothly for you — and how effective it is at driving clicks — depends on factors that vary from one account to another:

  • Your audience's behavior: Some follower bases tap stickers readily; others scroll past them
  • What you're linking to: External URLs, app store links, YouTube videos, and landing pages all behave slightly differently once opened
  • How you design the Story: A link sticker buried in a cluttered visual gets far fewer taps than one placed prominently with a clear visual cue pointing to it
  • Your account's engagement baseline: Instagram's algorithm influences Story reach, and reach directly affects how many people even see the link

Understanding the mechanics is one thing — but how those mechanics play out for your specific account, content style, and audience is something only your own testing can reveal.
