How to Delete Things on YouTube: Videos, Comments, History, and More
YouTube gives you more control over your content and data than most people realize — but the options are scattered across different menus depending on what you're trying to delete. Whether you want to remove a video you uploaded, wipe your watch history, or clean up old comments, each type of deletion works differently.
What Can You Actually Delete on YouTube?
Before diving into steps, it helps to know the categories:
- Uploaded videos — content you've published to your channel
- Comments — things you've written on other videos or your own
- Watch history — the record of videos you've viewed
- Search history — your past YouTube search queries
- Playlists — collections you've created
- Community posts — text/image posts from your channel (if enabled)
Each has its own location and deletion process, and some are only accessible from specific devices.
How to Delete an Uploaded Video
This is the most permanent action — once deleted, the video URL breaks and views are gone.
On desktop:
- Go to YouTube Studio
- Click Content in the left sidebar
- Hover over the video you want to remove
- Click the three-dot menu (⋮)
- Select Delete forever
- Confirm the deletion
On mobile (YouTube Studio app):
- Open the YouTube Studio app
- Tap Videos from the dashboard
- Tap the three-dot menu next to the video
- Select Delete
🗑️ Note that hiding a video (setting it to Private) is different from deleting it. Private keeps the video on your channel but invisible to others — useful if you're unsure about permanent removal.
How to Delete YouTube Comments
You can delete comments you've left on any video, as well as comments left by others on your own videos.
To delete your own comments:
- Find the comment (on the video page or via your Google account activity)
- Click or tap the three-dot menu next to the comment
- Select Delete
To delete comments on your videos:
- Open YouTube Studio
- Go to Comments in the left menu
- Find the comment, click the three-dot menu
- Select Remove or Hide user from channel
You can also hold a comment on mobile to access moderation options faster.
How to Clear Watch History
Your watch history affects what YouTube recommends to you. Clearing it resets those recommendations — for better or worse.
On desktop:
- Click your profile icon → Your data in YouTube
- Or go to History in the left sidebar on the YouTube homepage
- Click Clear all watch history
On mobile:
- Tap your profile icon → Manage all history
- This opens Google My Activity
- Select Delete → choose a time range or All time
You can also pause watch history entirely so YouTube stops recording future views — useful if you share a device or want a permanent fix rather than repeated manual clearing.
How to Delete YouTube Search History
Search history is stored separately from watch history.
On desktop or mobile:
- Go to History → select the Search history tab
- Delete individual searches by clicking the X next to each
- Or select Clear all search history to wipe everything at once
Both watch and search history are tied to your Google account, which means they sync across devices. Clearing on one device clears everywhere.
How to Delete a Playlist
- Go to Library → Playlists
- Open the playlist
- Click the three-dot menu
- Select Delete playlist
Deleting a playlist doesn't delete the videos in it — it only removes the collection itself.
Comparing Deletion Options at a Glance
| What to Delete | Where to Go | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|
| Uploaded video | YouTube Studio → Content | ❌ No |
| Your comment | Video page or activity | ❌ No |
| Comment on your video | YouTube Studio → Comments | ❌ No |
| Watch history | History tab or Google Activity | ❌ No |
| Search history | History → Search tab | ❌ No |
| Playlist | Library → Playlists | ❌ No |
| Video visibility | Studio → Content → Visibility | ✅ Yes (Private/Unlisted) |
Variables That Affect Your Experience
A few factors change how smoothly this process goes:
- Device type — Some deletion options only appear fully on desktop. The mobile app and mobile browser can behave differently from each other.
- Account type — Brand accounts and personal accounts have slightly different Studio layouts.
- Channel features — Community posts and memberships only appear if your channel has them enabled.
- Google account settings — Auto-delete settings in Google My Activity can affect how long history is retained before YouTube even shows it.
🔍 One Thing Worth Knowing About "Deleted" Content
Deleting a video removes it from public view immediately, but it may take time to disappear from Google search results and cached pages. If the video was embedded elsewhere, those embeds will break — but screenshots and re-uploads by others are outside your control.
Similarly, clearing watch history doesn't erase data already used to build your recommendation profile — it resets the visible log, but algorithmic learning doesn't fully revert overnight.
How much any of this matters depends on your reason for deleting — whether that's privacy, channel management, recommendation hygiene, or something else entirely shapes which options are actually worth using.
