How to Delete Characters in Character AI: What You Can (and Can't) Do
Character AI has become one of the most popular platforms for conversational roleplay and AI-driven storytelling. But as you build out your character library, you'll inevitably want to clean house — removing old characters, test builds, or ones that just didn't work out. Here's what you actually need to know about deleting characters, including the limitations most users run into.
What "Deleting" a Character Means on Character AI
On Character AI, characters are AI personas you create with custom names, descriptions, personalities, and example dialogue. Deleting a character means permanently removing it from your profile so it no longer appears in your character list and can no longer be interacted with.
This is distinct from:
- Archiving or hiding a character (not a native feature as of current platform versions)
- Editing a character's settings or personality
- Deleting a chat with a character (a separate action entirely)
Understanding the difference matters because many users go looking for a delete option when they actually want to edit, and vice versa.
How to Delete a Character You Created 🗑️
You can only delete characters you personally created. Public characters made by other users cannot be deleted from your account — you can simply stop interacting with them.
To delete your own character:
- Go to character.ai and log into your account
- Navigate to your profile page by clicking your avatar or username
- Find the character you want to remove under "My Characters"
- Click on the character to open its settings or tap the three-dot menu (⋮) next to the character name
- Select "Edit Character" to enter the character editor
- Scroll down to find the delete option — typically labeled "Delete Character" at the bottom of the settings page
- Confirm the deletion when prompted
The process is largely the same on both desktop browsers and the mobile app (iOS and Android), though the exact layout of menus can vary slightly depending on which version of the app you're running.
What Gets Deleted — and What Doesn't
This is where many users get confused. When you delete a character:
| What Happens | Details |
|---|---|
| Character profile removed | Name, avatar, description, and personality settings are deleted |
| Character no longer accessible | It disappears from your public or private character list |
| Existing chat histories | These may persist separately in your chat log, depending on platform behavior |
| Others' copies | If someone else added your character to their chats, their version may remain accessible to them |
Chat logs are stored independently from character profiles on Character AI. Deleting a character does not automatically delete every conversation you've had with it. If you want to clear those too, you'll need to delete the individual chats separately from the chat history section.
Deleting Chats vs. Deleting Characters
These are two different actions in different parts of the interface:
- Delete a character → Profile settings → removes the AI persona itself
- Delete a chat → Chat history → removes the conversation thread
To delete a chat, open your chat list, find the conversation, and look for a long-press option (mobile) or a context menu (desktop) that gives you a delete or remove option. Some users find this useful when they want to reset a storyline with the same character without deleting the character itself.
Common Issues and Variables That Affect the Process 🔧
Not every user experiences the same interface. Several factors influence what you see and what options are available:
Platform version and updates Character AI updates its UI regularly. The exact placement of the delete button, the labels used, and the confirmation flow can differ between app versions. If you don't see a delete option where guides say it should be, check whether your app needs an update.
Character visibility settings Characters set to public versus unlisted versus private have slightly different management options. Public characters with significant usage may have additional confirmation steps before deletion.
Account type Character AI offers a standard free tier and a Character AI+ subscription. While both allow character deletion, subscription users may have access to additional character management features or a different dashboard layout.
Device and browser Mobile app users (iOS or Android) and desktop browser users see different interface layouts. If you're struggling to find the option on one platform, trying the other sometimes makes the process clearer.
What You Cannot Delete
There are real limits to what's removable:
- Characters created by other users — you have no deletion rights over these
- Default or featured characters — platform-native characters like those tied to Character AI's own demos are not user-deletable
- Conversation data on Character AI's servers — deleting a character removes it from your view, but underlying model interaction data is subject to Character AI's own data retention and privacy policies, not your delete button
If data privacy is a concern, reviewing Character AI's privacy policy and data deletion request process is a separate step from in-app character deletion.
Why the Right Approach Depends on Your Situation
Whether you're doing light housekeeping on a few test characters, managing a large library of creative personas, or trying to remove something for privacy reasons — each scenario points toward a different set of steps and priorities.
A casual user tidying up their profile has a straightforward path. Someone concerned about conversation data needs to go further. A creator who published a character widely may need to think through how deletion affects users who already interacted with it. The same delete button carries different weight depending on what you built, how publicly it was shared, and what your actual goal is in removing it.
