How to Disable Gemini on Android and Google Apps

Google's Gemini AI assistant has become deeply integrated into Android devices and Google's app ecosystem. Whether it replaced Google Assistant on your phone without warning or you simply prefer a different workflow, knowing how to disable or limit Gemini gives you back control over how your device behaves. The process isn't always a single toggle — it depends on your Android version, device manufacturer, and which parts of Gemini you want to turn off.

What Gemini Actually Is (and What You're Turning Off)

Gemini is Google's AI assistant, available as a standalone app and as the default assistant layer on many Android devices running Android 10 and above. It can replace Google Assistant entirely, handle voice commands, summarize content, and integrate with Gmail, Docs, and other Google services.

When people want to "disable Gemini," they usually mean one of a few things:

  • Removing Gemini as the default phone assistant
  • Disabling the Gemini app itself
  • Turning off Gemini features within Google Workspace apps (like Gmail or Docs)
  • Preventing Gemini from launching with the side button or hold gesture

Each of these has a different solution.

How to Switch Back to Google Assistant (or Another Assistant)

On most Android phones, the fastest fix is changing your default digital assistant:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to AppsDefault Apps (on some devices: Default AppsDigital Assistant App)
  3. Tap Digital assistant app
  4. Select Google Assistant or another preferred assistant from the list

This won't delete Gemini, but it stops Gemini from activating when you long-press the home button or use the assistant shortcut. On Samsung Galaxy devices, this setting may live inside Settings → Advanced Features → Bixby Routines or within the Device Assistance App menu, depending on the One UI version.

⚙️ Note: The exact menu path varies by manufacturer. Pixel devices, Samsung, OnePlus, and others each organize these settings differently.

How to Disable the Gemini App Entirely

If you want to go further and disable the Gemini app itself:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Apps (or Application Manager)
  3. Search for Gemini
  4. Tap Disable (if the option is available)

On some devices, Gemini cannot be fully uninstalled because it ships as a system app. The Disable option stops it from running in the background and removes it from your app drawer without deleting core system files. On devices where Gemini was installed from the Play Store as a regular app, you can tap Uninstall instead.

If you don't see a Disable option, the app may be too tightly integrated with the Android system partition on that specific device or Android version.

Turning Off Gemini in Google Workspace Apps 🤖

Gemini features also appear as in-app tools inside Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Meet. These are controlled separately from the assistant app.

AppWhere to Find the Toggle
GmailSettings → [Your Account] → Gemini in Gmail
Google DocsTools → Gemini (disable per-document or account-wide via Admin)
Google MeetSettings → Gemini features
Google Workspace AdminAdmin Console → Apps → Gemini for Workspace

For personal Google accounts, some of these toggles are available within individual app settings. For Google Workspace for Business or Education accounts, an administrator typically controls whether Gemini features are enabled at the domain level — individual users may have limited ability to turn them off.

Revoking Gemini's Permissions as a Middle Ground

If full disabling isn't possible or isn't what you want, restricting permissions is a useful alternative:

  • Microphone access — prevents voice activation
  • Location — stops location-aware suggestions
  • Contacts and Calendar — limits what Gemini can read and reference

Go to Settings → Apps → Gemini → Permissions and revoke anything that doesn't match your comfort level. This keeps the app technically installed but significantly limits its reach.

Variables That Affect What Options You Have

Not every Android user sees the same options. Several factors determine what's available to you:

  • Android version: Newer versions have tighter Gemini integration; older versions may not have it at all
  • Device manufacturer: Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and others customize Android in ways that affect where settings live and what can be disabled
  • Whether Gemini is a system app or a Play Store install: System apps have stricter uninstall restrictions
  • Account type: Personal Google accounts vs. Workspace (business/school) accounts have different admin controls
  • Whether Gemini replaced Assistant automatically: Some devices received this change via a system update without explicit user consent, while others required a manual opt-in

The Spectrum of Outcomes

On a stock Android Pixel phone with a personal Google account, you'll likely have the most flexibility — you can switch the default assistant, disable the app, and adjust individual app settings with relative ease.

On a carrier-branded or manufacturer-customized Android phone, some menus may be buried, renamed, or restricted. The Disable option may be grayed out, or Gemini may be bundled with Google Play Services in a way that complicates removal.

On a Google Workspace managed device, your ability to change these settings may be entirely controlled by your organization's IT administrator, regardless of what you find in your personal app settings.

The right steps — and what's actually achievable — depend entirely on which of these situations describes your device, your account, and how your Android version handles assistant app management. 🔍
