Speed of AI progress: Current AI tools are impressive but inconsistent. Whether the next generation closes existing gaps significantly — or opens new ones — is genuinely uncertain.

What "Replacement" Would Actually Require

For AI to replace programmers wholesale, it would need to do more than write code. It would need to:

  • Understand ambiguous human requirements and translate them into precise technical decisions
  • Take responsibility for production systems failing at 2am
  • Navigate organizational politics to get alignment on what to build
  • Recognize when a technically feasible solution is a bad idea
  • Learn a company's specific context without being explicitly told everything

None of those are purely code-generation problems. They're judgment problems — and judgment at scale, in context, with consequences attached, remains a human domain.

At one end: developers who use AI tools fluently are already more productive and will likely remain in high demand. At the other: roles that consist almost entirely of low-complexity implementation work are shrinking, a trend AI is accelerating but didn't start.

Between those poles is a wide range of programming roles, and where any given role falls depends on factors specific to the work, the organization, the domain, and how quickly AI tooling continues to mature.

The honest picture is one of compression at the bottom, demand at the top, and significant uncertainty in the middle — with the middle being where most working programmers actually sit.
