How to Delete Search History on Google Maps (All Devices)
Google Maps quietly builds up a detailed log of everywhere you've searched, every route you've planned, and every place you've tapped. That history gets used to surface suggestions — but it also means anyone who picks up your phone can see exactly where you've been looking. Here's how the system works, how to clear it, and why the right approach varies depending on how you use the app.
What Google Maps Actually Stores
Before diving into deletion steps, it helps to understand that Google Maps keeps two separate layers of history:
- Local search history — stored on your device, within the app itself. This powers the autocomplete suggestions that appear when you tap the search bar.
- Google Account activity — stored on Google's servers, tied to your signed-in account. This includes Location History (your physical movements, if enabled) and Maps Activity (searches and directions you've looked up).
These two layers are managed in different places. Clearing one doesn't automatically clear the other. Many people delete their in-app searches and assume everything is gone — but their Google Account may still hold a full record.
How to Delete Recent Searches in the Google Maps App
On Android
- Open Google Maps and tap the search bar at the top.
- Your recent searches appear as a list below.
- To remove a single entry, tap the X next to it.
- To clear all recent searches at once, go to Settings → Maps history → Delete activity by → All time.
On iPhone (iOS)
The steps are nearly identical:
- Tap the search bar to reveal recent searches.
- Swipe left on any entry and tap Delete, or tap the X beside it.
- For bulk deletion, go to your profile icon → Settings → Maps history, then choose your deletion range.
On Desktop (Google Maps in a Browser)
- Click the hamburger menu (three lines) in the top-left corner.
- Select Your data in Maps.
- You'll be redirected to your Google Account activity controls, where you can delete searches from there.
How to Delete Location History and Maps Activity from Your Google Account 🗺️
This is the layer that lives on Google's servers — and it requires a separate step.
- Go to myactivity.google.com (or tap your profile photo in Maps → Manage your Google Account → Data & Privacy → My Activity).
- Filter by Google Maps to see only Maps-related activity.
- Delete individual items, or use Delete activity by to wipe a date range or all history.
You can also set up auto-delete so that Maps activity older than 3, 18, or 36 months is removed automatically. This setting is found under Data & Privacy → History settings → Maps Activity.
If Location History is enabled on your account, that's managed separately under Timeline in Maps or through the same Data & Privacy section of your Google Account.
The Difference Between Pausing and Deleting
Pausing activity means Google Maps stops recording new searches and location data going forward — but existing history remains intact until you delete it manually.
Deleting removes what's already there, but if activity tracking is still enabled, Maps will start logging again from that point forward.
For users who want a clean slate and want it to stay that way, the two actions need to be used together: delete existing history and pause or disable the relevant activity settings.
Variables That Affect Your Experience
Not everyone will find this process identical. A few factors that change the picture:
| Variable | How It Affects the Process |
|---|---|
| Signed in vs. signed out | Signed-out users only have local history to clear; no Google Account layer exists |
| Android vs. iOS | Minor UI differences; Android users may have deeper integration with Google Account controls |
| App version | Older versions of Maps may show settings under different menu paths |
| Shared or family devices | Multiple Google accounts may each have separate history layers |
| Google Workspace accounts | Organizational accounts may have restricted access to activity controls |
What Happens After You Delete
Once deleted from your Google Account, Maps history is generally removed from Google's active servers, though Google's privacy policy notes that data may remain in backup systems for a short period before being fully purged. Deleted local search history disappears from autocomplete immediately.
Your starred places, saved lists, and reviews are not affected by deleting search or location history — those are stored separately and require independent deletion if you want them gone.
Why Your Setup Matters More Than Any Single Step
The "right" way to clear your Google Maps history depends on factors that differ from person to person. Someone who uses Maps while signed out of Google has almost nothing stored server-side. Someone who has had Location History enabled for years has a much deeper archive to work through. A shared household device creates a different set of privacy considerations than a personal phone.
The distinction between local history, Maps Activity, and Location History is where most people get tripped up — and understanding which of those applies to your situation determines how thorough your cleanup actually needs to be. 🔍
