The First Mechanical Calculators (1600s–1800s)

The story begins in 1642, when French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal built what is widely considered the first true mechanical calculator. Called the Pascaline, it used a series of interlocking gears and wheels to perform addition and subtraction. It was built to help his father — a tax collector — process large volumes of numbers. Pascal produced around 50 of them, though they were expensive, fragile, and mostly a curiosity for the wealthy.

About 30 years later, in 1673, German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz improved on Pascal's design with the Stepped Reckoner.
