How to Move an App on an iPhone: Rearranging Your Home Screen

Rearranging apps on an iPhone is one of those things that sounds simple until you're pressing and swiping and nothing seems to be working the way you expect. Whether you want to clear up clutter, group related apps together, or just put your most-used tools within thumb's reach, understanding exactly how iOS handles app placement will save you a lot of frustration.

The Basics: Entering Jiggle Mode

The foundation of moving apps on an iPhone is what Apple informally calls Jiggle Mode — a state where all your icons become repositionable.

To activate it:

  1. Long-press any app icon on your Home Screen
  2. A quick-action menu will appear — tap "Edit Home Screen"
  3. All apps will begin to wiggle, and a small "–" (minus) button will appear on each icon

Once you're in Jiggle Mode, you can drag any app to a new position. When you're done, press the side button (or Home button on older models) or tap "Done" in the top-right corner to lock everything in place.

📱 On iPhones running iOS 16 and later, you can also long-press on an empty area of the Home Screen to enter Jiggle Mode directly, without going through the quick-action menu.

Moving a Single App to a New Spot

Once in Jiggle Mode:

  • Tap and hold the app you want to move
  • Drag it to its new position on the same page
  • Other icons will automatically shift to make room

The icons shuffle in real time as you drag, so you can see exactly where the app will land before you release. This fluid repositioning is one of the more intuitive parts of iOS home screen management.

Moving an App to a Different Home Screen Page

If you want to send an app to a completely different page:

  1. Enter Jiggle Mode
  2. Pick up the app by holding it
  3. Drag it toward the left or right edge of the screen
  4. Pause briefly at the edge — the screen will scroll to the next page
  5. Drop the app where you want it

This takes a bit of practice. The key is holding the drag steady at the edge without releasing the icon too early. If the screen isn't scrolling, try dragging the icon slightly further toward the edge.

Moving Multiple Apps at Once 🗂️

iOS lets you pick up several apps simultaneously, which is useful when reorganizing in bulk:

  1. Enter Jiggle Mode
  2. Start dragging one app with one finger
  3. While still holding, use another finger to tap additional apps — they'll stack under your dragging finger
  4. Drag the whole group to the new location and release

This works across pages too, which makes batch-reorganizing a full home screen much faster.

Moving Apps Into or Out of Folders

Folders let you group apps by category, and moving apps in and out of them works the same way:

ActionHow to Do It
Add to a folderDrag an app and drop it directly on top of another app or an existing folder
Remove from a folderOpen the folder, enter Jiggle Mode inside it, drag the app out to the edge until the folder closes
Create a new folderDrop one app on top of another — iOS creates a folder automatically with a suggested name

The folder-within-a-folder nesting that some users expect is not supported in iOS — you can only go one level deep.

Using the App Library and Home Screen Together

Since iOS 14, iPhones include the App Library — an automatically organized view of all installed apps, found by swiping left past your last Home Screen page.

This changes the equation for many users. You can:

  • Remove an app from the Home Screen without deleting it — it stays accessible in the App Library
  • Add an app back from the App Library to the Home Screen by long-pressing it and selecting "Add to Home Screen"

This means moving apps isn't just about page position anymore. Some users prefer a minimal Home Screen with only frequently used apps, relying on the App Library or Spotlight Search (swipe down on the Home Screen) for everything else.

Variables That Affect the Experience

How straightforward this process feels depends on a few factors:

iOS version matters. The long-press behavior, Jiggle Mode entry points, and available options have shifted across iOS 14, 15, 16, and later. If your steps don't match what you see, checking your iOS version under Settings → General → About is a good first step.

iPhone model affects how you confirm changes — older iPhones with a physical Home button use it to exit Jiggle Mode, while Face ID models use the side button or on-screen "Done."

Screen size and display zoom settings influence how many apps fit per page (typically a 4×6 grid on standard iPhones, fewer on smaller screens or with Display Zoom enabled), which in turn affects how much rearranging is even necessary.

Usage patterns shape which approach makes sense. Someone who launches apps through Siri or Spotlight rarely needs a meticulously organized Home Screen. Someone who navigates visually benefits from intentional grouping and page structure.

When Jiggle Mode Doesn't Behave as Expected

A few common issues:

  • Icons won't jiggle: Make sure you're pressing on the app itself, not a widget. Widgets behave differently and have their own edit options.
  • App won't move to another page: You may have reached the maximum number of Home Screen pages (iOS supports up to 15).
  • App disappears after moving: It may have been accidentally dropped into a folder or the App Library. Check both.

How much rearranging is useful — and which organizational approach fits your habits — depends entirely on how you actually use your phone day to day.
