Knowing what type of internet connection you're using isn't just trivia — it affects your speeds, reliability, latency, and what you can realistically expect from your service. The Main Types of Internet Connections

Fiber (Fiber-Optic) Data travels as pulses of light through glass or plastic cables. Fiber delivers the fastest and most consistent speeds available to residential users, with symmetrical upload and download speeds being common. Latency is generally very low.
Cable Uses the same coaxial infrastructure as cable TV. Cable internet is widely available and capable of high download speeds, but upload speeds are typically much lower than download speeds. 5G Home Internet Uses cellular 5G networks to deliver broadband wirelessly to a home router. Availability is tied entirely to 5G coverage in your area. Speeds and consistency vary based on network congestion and your distance from cell towers.
Dial-Up Extremely rare today. Uses a standard phone line and limits you to very low speeds. If you're on dial-up, you almost certainly already know it.
How to Check What Type of Connection You Have 🔍
Check Your Router or Modem
The fastest method. Look at the physical device your ISP provided or that you purchased:

- DSL modem: Has a standard phone jack (RJ-11) port

Check With Your ISP
Log into your internet provider's account portal or app. Under your plan or account details, the connection type is almost always listed. You can also call or chat with support and ask directly — they can tell you the technology type on your account.
Check Your Router's Admin Interface
Open a browser and navigate to your router's admin page (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 — check the label on your router). Under WAN or internet settings, many routers display the connection type detected. This is more useful for confirming DSL vs. cable than for identifying fiber vs. fixed wireless.
Check on Windows
