How to Delete Apple Maps Data: Search History, Favorites, and Cached Information
Apple Maps quietly collects a surprising amount of data as you use it — search history, recent destinations, saved places, and cached map tiles. Whether you're concerned about privacy, troubleshooting odd app behavior, or handing a device to someone else, knowing exactly what data exists and how to remove it puts you back in control.
What Data Does Apple Maps Actually Store?
Before deleting anything, it helps to understand what Apple Maps is holding onto:
- Search history — every address or business you've typed into the search bar
- Recent locations — places you've navigated to recently, shown as quick-access suggestions
- Favorites and Collections — manually saved places like Home, Work, or custom lists
- Significant Locations — a system-level feature (not strictly Maps) that logs frequently visited places
- Cached map tiles — locally stored map imagery that speeds up load times
- Routing history — recent turn-by-turn navigation sessions
These are stored differently, which is why there's no single "delete everything" button. You have to address each category on its own terms.
How to Clear Apple Maps Search History and Recents
The most commonly searched piece of this puzzle is removing recent searches and destinations.
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open Apple Maps
- Tap the search bar at the bottom of the screen
- Scroll down to the Recents section
- Swipe left on an individual entry and tap Remove, or tap Clear at the top right of the Recents list to remove all of them at once
This removes the visible search history from the app's suggestions. It doesn't affect Favorites or Significant Locations.
On Mac:
- Open Maps
- Click in the search field
- Hover over a recent entry and click the X button to remove it, or right-click for removal options
How to Delete Favorites and Collections 🗺️
Favorites and Collections are intentional saves — places you've bookmarked manually. Deleting them is separate from clearing recents.
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open Apple Maps and tap the search bar
- Scroll to the Favorites section
- Tap More to see the full list
- Tap Edit, then tap the red minus icon next to any entry you want to remove
For Collections, tap More next to Collections, open the relevant collection, tap Edit, and delete individual items or the entire collection.
Synced across iCloud: If you use iCloud, Favorites and Collections sync across your Apple devices. Deleting them on one device removes them everywhere signed into the same Apple ID.
How to Turn Off or Clear Significant Locations
Significant Locations is technically an iOS system feature under Privacy settings, not something you manage inside the Maps app itself. It uses on-device machine learning to remember where you frequently go.
To clear and disable it:
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- Scroll down and tap System Services
- Tap Significant Locations
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode
- Tap Clear History to wipe stored location records
- Toggle Significant Locations off to stop future recording
This data is encrypted and Apple states it doesn't leave your device in an identifiable form — but if you'd rather it not exist locally either, clearing it here handles that.
Resetting Location Access for Maps Entirely
If you want to go further — stopping Apple Maps from using your location at all — you can revoke location permissions:
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- Scroll to Maps in the app list
- Choose Never or While Using the App depending on your preference
Setting it to Never means Maps won't access your GPS at all, which affects real-time navigation. While Using the App is the middle-ground most users stay with.
Does Deleting the App Remove All Maps Data?
Offloading or deleting the Apple Maps app removes cached data and some locally stored information, but Maps is a system app on iOS — it can't be fully uninstalled on most iPhones. You can offload it via Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Maps → Offload App, which clears cached tiles and frees space while keeping your documents and data.
| Data Type | Cleared by Offloading | Cleared Manually | Synced via iCloud |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search history / Recents | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Favorites | ❌ No | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Collections | ❌ No | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Significant Locations | ❌ No | Via Settings | ❌ No |
| Cached map tiles | ✅ Yes | ❌ Not directly | ❌ No |
The Variables That Affect Your Situation
How much data Apple Maps holds — and which steps matter most for you — depends on several factors:
- iOS version: Menu layouts and option labels shift slightly between iOS versions, so exact navigation paths may differ slightly from the steps above
- iCloud sign-in status: If you're not signed into iCloud, Favorites and Collections are device-local only
- Device type: Steps on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay differ in meaningful ways
- How actively you use Maps: Heavy daily navigation users accumulate far more routing and location history than occasional users
Someone handing a device to a family member has different priorities than someone troubleshooting battery drain caused by location logging — and the right combination of steps looks different in each case. 🔒
