How to Delete a YouTube Search: Clearing History on Any Device
YouTube remembers everything you search for — and while that can be helpful for picking up where you left off, there are plenty of reasons you might want to clean that slate. Whether you're sharing a device, managing your privacy, or just tidying up your recommendations, deleting YouTube search history is straightforward once you know where to look.
What YouTube Search History Actually Is
Every time you type something into YouTube's search bar while signed into your Google account, that query gets saved. This data lives in two places:
- Locally on your device — the autocomplete suggestions that appear when you start typing
- In your Google account — part of your broader YouTube watch and search history, stored in the cloud
This distinction matters because clearing one doesn't automatically clear the other. You might remove the local autocomplete suggestions on your phone but still have those searches logged in your Google account — and vice versa.
How to Delete Individual YouTube Searches
On Mobile (iOS and Android)
When you tap the search bar in the YouTube app, recent searches appear as a list below it. To remove a single entry:
- Tap the Search icon to open the search bar
- Your recent searches will appear as a list
- Tap and hold (Android) or swipe left (iOS) on the search term you want to remove
- Select Remove or tap the X icon next to it
This clears that suggestion from appearing in your local autocomplete — but it doesn't necessarily wipe it from your Google account history.
On Desktop (Browser)
In a web browser at youtube.com:
- Click the search bar at the top of the page
- Hover over any recent search suggestion that appears in the dropdown
- Click the X on the right side of that suggestion to remove it
Again, this affects what shows up as a local suggestion. Your full history remains in your account unless you take the next step.
How to Delete Your Full YouTube Search History
Through YouTube Settings
This is the most thorough approach for signed-in users:
- Go to YouTube.com and sign in
- Click your profile icon in the top right
- Select Settings, then navigate to History & Privacy
- Click Clear Search History
On mobile, the path is slightly different:
- Tap your profile icon
- Go to Settings → History & Privacy
- Tap Clear Search History
This removes your YouTube search history from your account.
Through Google My Activity
Because YouTube is a Google product, your YouTube searches are also logged in Google My Activity (myactivity.google.com). This is the most complete way to manage everything in one place:

If you'd rather stop YouTube from saving searches going forward, you can pause history collection:
