How to Change the Language on Amazon (Website, App & Alexa)

Amazon operates across dozens of countries and supports multiple languages — but the steps to switch your language depend on which Amazon surface you're using, where your account is registered, and what device you're on. Here's how each scenario works.

Why Amazon's Language Settings Aren't One-Size-Fits-All

Amazon isn't a single app or website — it's a ecosystem of products: the browser-based store, the mobile shopping app, Alexa-enabled devices, Kindle readers, and Fire tablets. Each one manages language independently. Changing the language on Amazon.com won't automatically change the language on your Fire tablet, and switching your Alexa voice language is a separate process entirely.

There's also an important distinction between marketplace language and account language. Amazon's marketplace is tied to a region (Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, etc.), and some language options are only available within specific marketplaces. If your account is registered to Amazon.com, your language choices will be limited to what Amazon's US marketplace supports — primarily English and Spanish, with some additional options depending on your location settings.

Changing the Language on Amazon's Website 🌐

On a desktop or mobile browser:

  1. Go to Amazon.com and sign in.
  2. Hover over (or tap) the flag icon or language selector near the top of the page — typically found in the top navigation bar next to "Account & Lists."
  3. Select your preferred language from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click Save Changes.

Amazon.com currently offers a limited set of languages compared to regional marketplaces. If you're shopping on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, or another international store, the language options will reflect that marketplace's supported languages. Switching languages on a regional site follows the same steps but offers a different selection.

Important: If you don't see a language selector, your account region may not support multiple language options at the storefront level. Some language changes are tied to your country/region settings rather than a standalone language toggle.

Changing the Language on the Amazon Shopping App

The Amazon mobile app (iOS and Android) inherits language settings differently depending on your operating system:

  • On Android: The app typically follows your device's system language. To change it, go to your phone's Settings → General Management (or System) → Language, and update the system language. The Amazon app will reflect this change after a restart.
  • On iOS: Amazon's app may follow your iPhone's preferred language or allow in-app overrides. Go to iPhone Settings → scroll to the Amazon app → Language, and select your preferred language if that option appears.

Some versions of the Android app also include an in-app language setting. Check Menu (☰) → Settings → Language preferences if you want to change it without affecting your whole device.

Changing Language on Amazon Alexa

Alexa's language affects how she understands and responds to you — and it's configured through the Alexa app, not Amazon.com.

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  2. Tap Devices at the bottom.
  3. Select your Echo device.
  4. Tap Language.
  5. Choose from the available languages for your device's region.

Alexa supports a growing list of languages and dialects, including English (US, UK, Australian, Indian), Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, and others — but availability depends on your device model and country registration. Older Echo devices may have a narrower language selection than newer ones.

Note: Changing Alexa's language to one that's set to a different regional variant (e.g., switching from US English to German) may affect how Alexa interprets commands and which skills are available to you.

Changing Language on Fire Tablets and Kindle Devices

These are standalone device-level settings, entirely separate from your Amazon account language:

Fire Tablet:

  • Go to Settings → Device Options → Language & Keyboard → Language
  • Select your preferred language

Kindle E-Reader:

  • Go to Settings (gear icon) → All Settings → Language & Dictionaries → Language
  • Choose your language and confirm

Both devices download language files if they're not already installed, so you'll need a Wi-Fi connection to complete the switch.

The Variable That Changes Everything 🔧

Language availability on Amazon isn't just a toggle — it's shaped by which marketplace your account belongs to, which device or surface you're using, and in some cases, which language packs are supported for your hardware generation. A US-registered Amazon account has different language options than an EU-registered one. A first-generation Echo has different Alexa language support than a current-generation device.

That means the exact steps — and even the available languages — will look different depending on your specific combination of account region, device, and app version. Understanding which surface you actually need to change, and what that surface's language support looks like for your setup, is where the process gets personal.
